I have a Ruger #1 in 458 Lott, Problem is I can't see the sights good anymore. I have a Red dot that I'm not using anymore that was on a 44 mag. It has held up to the recoil on the handgun fine. Anyone have a red dot on a DG rifle? Pro's--- Con's? Thanks, Stubert

stubert I have done a lot of work with red dot sights. Go to the double rifle forum and search red dot sights. The one I would recommend would be the Doctor Optic. DOUBLE RIFLE SHOOTERS SOCIETY

Why not just get a fluorescent front sight or whatever those things are. I have seen them on shotguns and they certainly draw your eye to them. Peter. Be without fear in the face of your enemies. I like the EoTech with a 1 minute dot ... and AA batteries. Not traditional. Are very robust and very fast. Mike -------------- DRSS, Womper's Club, NRA Life Member/Charter Member NRA Golden Eagles ... Knifemaker, http://www.mstarling.com

Mike on an AR 15 I like an EO Tech, I prefer the one with that uses the lithium 123 batteries, the same ones as my "light source". But on a hunting rifle I prefer the Doctor Optic. PS The EOT 4x "extender" works great. DOUBLE RIFLE SHOOTERS SOCIETY

I have worked a lot with the red dots over the last few years. I prefer the Aimpoint Comp with a 2 mil dot. I have had them on 458 Lott and 470 Capstick and they did fine. In the last few years I have had several of my rifles made with a forward SSK T'SOB rail, just in front of the receiver to mount either an Aimpoint or forward scope. Being a 1.5X5 Leupold fan on my big bores it has been a learning experience, and continuing education. At 50 yds (my eyes) don't expect to shoot tiny groups, at least not all the time. Some days yes--some days no! The dot, even 2 mil covers a lot of target at 50. So put dot on target shoot-thats what they are for, not to do test work, test loads, or anything else. For the amateur shooter it is without doubt the fastest on target at close range. I have taken several people with the Aimpoint, irons, and scopes and conducted tests with them. Nearly all of them had the best times and accuracy with the Aimpoints. This was up close timed events from 10 yds to 25 yds. Very simple, dot on target press trigger. I have taken them to the field a few times and they did well, but in brush I had a hard time finding and picking targets. Open ground worked well for me. For this type application batteries are always a concern. Less so with the Aimpoints as now the batteries last nearly forever! A couple years ago I turned one on in camp, used it for 16 days, left it on and 6 months later it was still on! Not too bad, and don't have to worry about the battery going dead by the next day or so. I have several units, but have yet to use them on dangerous game. I still like the 1.5X5 Leupolds and have worked with them so many years that I tend to do better with them than anything else. But I think the red dots are great, I just have to pick the right terrain, not too much brush, and keep ranges close, which is not an issue for big bore rifles. With these issues considered they work and are very fast on target. the neat thing about reddots, is that shoot with both eyes open, and when the dot is on target, fire... you dont have to have a full scope to shoot, theres no definite eye relief.... go big or go home ........ DSC-- Life Member NRA--Life member DRSS--9.3x74 r Chapuis

I bought a 4 minute red dot trijicon for my Merkel Double Rifle and had Merkel USA install it on a Weaver base mounted on the rib. I just got it back and have not shot it yet, but it really solved my vision problem. I compared the Doctor and Trijicon and went with Trijicon for several reasons. The Doctor was backordered everywhere I tried with 6 months wait. The trijicon is tested to 5,000 G's, has a lifetime warranty with the warranty service in the USA and was available immediately. The Trijicon has an excellent reputation for toughness. BUTCH C'est Tout Bon (It is all good)
