I went out and shot my .375 JDJ rifle today. While I was happy with the accuracy out of it with the 235 grain Speer bullet, I found all the jackets laying on top of the dirt backstop. Just wondering what other bullet I should try? I only average around 2200 fps and would like my bullet to hold together better.

At 2200fps the Speer bullet should work fine, I have used it to 2500fps on deer and pigs. The 250 Nosler Accubond bullet should work good as well. DOUBLE RIFLE SHOOTERS SOCIETY

If you are interested, I know someone who has a bunch of 165gr Hawk .025 jacket controled expansion bullets. I believe they were a special order item. If you are interested please PM me. I was just surprised to find no lead core at all left in the jackets. I realize dirt isn't the same as shooting an animal but I was kind of hoping at that speed they would have held together better. I read all the reports on how soft the Speer bullet was but I was hoping they would have been a little tougher. Any thoughts on the Barnes 235 grain TSX? I can pick them up here locally for about the same price as a Hawk 235 grain bullet shipped. I've never shot any TSX bullets, but I can't find much in a Spitzer under 250 grains.

Might try the Northfork 250gr. They are supposed to expand reliably at relatively low velocities. There is also a 200gr available from GS Custom of South Africa. If you search enough you might even be able to find some of the first Barnes X bullets 210gr .375. They do not expand well below 1900 though. IME and that of others, the 235 Speer gives poor expansion on game at low velocities because it is too hard. It was designed for full .375 H&H velocities. I'd try shooting wet newsprint or water jugs if you want to test bullet performance...unless you are hunting statues. The Hornady 220 FP works very well on game at 2200 fps muzzle velocity, as demonstrated by hundreds of .375 WCF hunters. .

I'll take a look at them. I only need about 200 yards out of the bullet to make me happy. The jackets sure were pretty mushrooms but without any lead in them sure was an eye opener. Should mention all my shooting with this rifle was done at 50 yards yesterday, maybe they would have held together better at 100 yards??? I still would like one that held together at MV out to 200 yards without shedding the jacket. I'm headed to AK in May for a bear hunt and want to use this rifle. I'm sure the bullets would kill a black bear just fine, but since I have to recover the meat I don't want a whole lot of destruction. Nor do I want very large holes in the hide if I manage to get another bear.

I've used the .235gr in my .375H&H Mag (loaded down slightly) for elk here in Colorado. Bullet performed well. .395 Family Member DRSS, po' boy member Political correctness is nothing but liberal enforced censorship

The Hawks might hold up at 2200 but they didn't at 24-2500 in my testing. As usual just my $.02 Paul K

I can really recommend the GS Custom HV 200 gr for a light for caliber bullet. I get 2900 ft/s and this is still a mild load. I do not have experience in North American game, but for Africa you can take anything up to Eland with this bullet.

Any welded core hollow point will expand and hold together at those lower velocities. I shot some at 200 grains which were swedged and quite accurate. I am sorry I do not know any companies currently making them. Frank

Sent an email off to the US distributors to get some questions answered. The bullet is a little more money than I want to spend, for practice at the range. Wish there was a similar weight and design cup n core bullet. I've got some 260 grain accubonds and I'll try them as well next outing.

I have shot several deer with the 235 Speer bullet in my 375 H&H loaded over either 60 or 64gr of IMR 3031. I have never recovered a bullet and most of the deer were DRT. I have also used the Hornady 220FP over 60gr of IMR 3031 on deer with excellent results. Only recovered one bullet, shot into a doe at 175 yards. Bullet found perfectly mushroomed in the rear ham when butchering the deer. DOUBLE RIFLE SHOOTERS SOCIETY

I have also loaded the Sierra 250gr bullet over 64gr of IMR 3031 for a fella with a CZ 375 H&H as it shot better in his gun than the Hornady or the Speer bullet. He has killed several deer with it with great results. DOUBLE RIFLE SHOOTERS SOCIETY
