I saw a guy at a local range the other day that had loaded a H&R Ultra Slug Gun 20 ga, I think it was the Deluxe Heavy barrel, with black powder in brass cases and conical bullets. They looked just like the old Paradox/Explora rounds. I have no idea the charge or weight of the very conical pointed bullets, but it was by far the loadest gun on the range. They looked rather heavy. That gun was easily louder than my buddies Marlin 45-70.

Have you guys done this, heard of it, and is it safe? It was kind of a redneck express bore gun. Really was neat and rather accurate too.

When shooting BP, it put a different "voice" to the shot. BP booms it does not crack like a smokeless load.

Keep an eye out for his when ever you go back, get the details.

In the pre war years H&R sold several single barreled shotguns with Paradox style rfling in India. My childhood buddy and competitive pistol shooter Linus Aruliah's brother Louis has one such gun in Chennai, India. The barrels were considerably thicker than the smoothbore shotguns also offered in India and the company should have sold some in the USA since they were made here anyway.

If H&R have brought the concept back, it should be a fantastic one for states which have shotgun for deer laws - a one budget priced gun for all hunting concept as it was in the pre way years should work very well today as well.

Cheers!

I do know this, the 20 bore has thick barrels and is built on the 12 bore action. The barrel is as thick as a 12. The 12 bore is built on a 10 bore action and similarly the barrel is thick.

Dang it, I was gonna try this and amaze the world, but it looks like someone else already has. I even have a stash of Magtech brass, and a 12-bore case with the NEI Fosbury 835-grain conical sitting in it sure looks like serious medicine.
Actually, if you look for the "Poor Man's .600" thread, you'll find more on this interesting concept.

I am not sure how well an H&R would spruce up into an Express rifle, but the 12Bore would be really cool! The one I saw was a 20. The accuracy was poor, but the guy jumped like a mule before the gun even went off. It looked like a shove not to bad, but he was super recoil shy. I have seen these guns print fairly accurately so I image if you match the slug to the gun you could do well.

The old guns were very accurate upto 60 yards - the maximum range at which you were likely to shoot a boar in India's forests - with ball ammunition that is still made over there.

I am sure that the new guns should be an improvement if modern metals and processes are used. They may not be Express rifles, but they would be cracking guns for deer, pigs or most game of that size upto 60 yards. cheers

I just looking at two old paradox catridges; one had a belted ball and the ohter a long conical. Sexy looking cartridges for a traditionalist like myself. I would love to hit an old feral boar with a 12 Bore belted ball.

Just a cheap idea for an piece of old histroy. I think I would go with the 12 and not the 20 like the chap I saw at the range.
