Anyone worked up some 505 Gibbs loads not using filler or with filler? Also, I am going to down load the round to 2150-2200 fps, wanting loads using the 600 grain bullets also. Thanks, Dirk

... with a 600gr Woodleigh FMJ, try 110gr Reloader 15, and a filler.

At 8,000', temp 56F, chrono set 15' from the muzzle, average for five shots was 2200fps. This load may be just what you're looking for.

I have no data for loads without a filler.

I have never bothered with a filler and mostly used 130gr 4831 and 120gr MPR behind 535gr (.510)Woodleigh's. 5744 also worked well and filled up the case but I'd have to look up my load and it is out at my lodge.

The internet-proclaimed Ryan Breeding MAX load for his GMA-actioned .505 Gibbs (unknown barrel length) is:

Horneber or Jamison brass
F215 primer
144.0 grains of H4831SC
600-grain Woodleigh Weldcore RNSP
2500 fps

Like Phil, I don't have my data handy, but IIRC, 136 grains of H4831SC in Jamison brass with GM215M primer, with the 525 gr Bridger Brass FN gave about 2300 fps in a 23" barreled CZ 550. Safe bolt thrust. Even in the 1:10" twist McGowen .505 barrel.

No more than 2200 fps with the 600-grainers would be a good idea. You'll have to work down from Breeding's load. Don't start there.

Nickudu data with RL-15 and filler is excellent.

This really highlights how much better the 500 A-Square (or 500 Mbogo) is than the .505 Gibbs.

The Rigby-case-head-based .510 caliber stopping rifles can do 2500 fps with 600 grainers (yes with higher pressure but with lesser bolt thrust than the .505 Gibbs) and the bullet is bigger by .005" diameter.

The bolt face will not be skeletonized and the magazine capacity is greater with the 500's.

That makes the .505 Gibbs either
1) the choice for the hopelessly nostalgic
or
2) the of 50 cal sporting rifles

Ron, Another reason to pick the 505. I'm left handed, and when you find ANY 50 CALIBER in a left handed mag mauser put together by Herstal Dumoulin himself for 5,300 dollars with a set of RCBS dies, bullets and brass, thats why I consider the choice of caliber to be a wise one.

What twist did Herstal Dumoulin choose for your barrel?

Ron, I don't know at this time what the twist rate is in the barrel, I will know by the end of the week. Barreled action went out today to Dan Pederson to cut and crown barrel + new banded front site etc. The rifle had the classic Euro 25 inch barrel, yuck! It will be 22 inches when he is done and it will weigh in at 12 lbs (it was 12.4 lbs with 25 inch barrel) I personally would like it around 11.5. I shot 600 grain Woodleighs at 2100 fps yesterday and the felt recoil was less than my 9.3 Chapuis, can you beat that. I will work up new loads in the future with my 22 inch barrel to 2200fps.
