Ok I have a request. This request may be impossible, but nevertheless, I thought I would try. I am looking to purchase a rifle in 375 H&H or Wby for my brother, who is just getting into big bores. I would like to keep the price around $500-$700 scoped. It is possible to do this in a rifle of decent quality? I would rather not buy him one at all before I buy him one of below average quality. Thanks in advance guys! Smiler

He wanted it scoped for $500-700, I reckon that will be a tough one. A used CZ or Whitworth might make it if you get an inexpensive scope, I'd suggest a fixed power, maybe 2.5 or 4 x. Jeffe is right though, check the Gunbroker and Auction Arms sites, you'll just have to be patient though. You might also find a used Ruger or Winchester if you keep checking the sites.

You should be able to run down a withworth or interarms on one of the auction sites or gunsamerica.com without a lot of trouble staying in your price range.

^^That deal seems a bit too good to be true. I wonder about the condition of the bore etc...

Thanks for the link though! I will be sure to contact him. Smiler

Its only too good to be true because the one person on the planet that wanted to do that to a Whitworth now wants to sell it. Limited market as-is but it could be improved by having the meatal put in a hot blue tank. At least it would pass for a satin blue at a distance.

I got some more pics from the guy...not too good. It looks like the gun has been beaten up quite a bit.

Not sure the words "cheap" and "good quality" go together. You may want to wait....

I agree they have no place being used together. The best rifles i saw in that price range are Ruger no.1 sans scope. Sometimes you can find one with scope, but it usualy is to high of power for D.G. use. If you want to hunt D.G. with a single be my guest. If it is intended for large non dangerous game it will make you a better hunter or will increase ammo mfgs stock prices. Hope this helps you out. Charlie

I see Ruger #1s in my area all the time for the $500-600 range. Some are in .458 but a lot in .375 H&H. www.kitterytradingpost.com Check their used gun section. I bought a #1 stainless/laminated LNIB in .405 Winchester last year for $575.00. It didn't look like it had been fired.
I hunted with a #1 in .375 for about 7 years. Mainly used reloads of 270 grain Hornady spire points loaded so that the base of the bullet was at the base of the neck with the case filled up with IMR4350 powder. It would shoot cloverleaf groups at 100 yards with a 1.5-5 Leupold.
Another friend has bought two Whitworth rifles from Kittery in the last year. I think he paid $475 for one and in the $500s for the other.

Bob

...just checked the KTP site...one #1 in .458 for $575 but none in .375 H&H right now.

www.gunbroker.com #31302702 #1 .375 H&H with 2-7 Leupold... current bid $601.00

For that kind of money find a beat up Whitworth or whatever with a good bore..A gun does not have to be pristine to kill a Buffalo...

Some of my hunting rifles look like crap, no blue, driftwood stock, but they shoot an inch and seldom let me down.

Would I refinish them, heck no, it took me too long to get them worn out, and every nick has a memory..

Unless you cheat a widow out of her recently-departed husband's rifle, you'll have to look long and hard in that price range. If you want a bolt gun, either the scope or the rifle (or both) will be pretty hammered and/or badly customized. You might find a Ruger #1, and they have pretty good resale value. Or you can haunt the pawnshops until the widow's rifle comes home with you.

$500, no, $700 maybe. A used Whitworth or CZ. Scope it w/ a Leup. 1x4 (e-bay has good deals if you are patient). That would get you right about $700.
