416TanzanUpdate from 2012:
I am the owner and shooter of a 500 AccRel Nyati.
The rifle is on its second barrel and third stock. The first barrel used a 1.25" freebore which was determined to be too long for brass bullets, maybe copper too. The second barrel uses a 0.255" freebore and shoots nice sub-MOA groups with both the tipped 360 grain CEB lever-raptor and also the 450 grain GSC hollow point.
The current stock appears stable and solid and uses a barrel recoil lug against a bedded all thread in the forearm and a cross bolt and additional all thread in the main action recoil area plus another cross bolt and a longitudinal all thread in the wrist. The result is quite nice and makes a Ruger Hawkeye plus Boyd's laminate stock into a reasonably light-carrying thumper.
Shoots nice.
I did add an 8-oz recoil reducer in the butt in order to better balance the barrel in the rather lightweight setup.

xausaMy first .50 caliber was in a rifle I had made with a cartridge I designed myself in the late 1960's, had built and took to Africa, where I used it to take a black rhino, three elephants and five Cape buffalo. It duplicated .500 Nitro Express ballistics in a rimless belted cartridge which fit a standard length action.
Since then, I have acquired a .505 Gibbs and a .500 Jeffry.

My .505 SRE is the only one I have actually hunted in Africa with, and at age 78, am unlikely to give the other two a try, so it gets the nod. I think it would anyway, because it performs anything the other two would do in a smaller, more modern package. Here is the original drawing I made of the cartridge:

WildcatterThe big bore forum seems to have slipped lately. All of the threads seem to center on 375-416-458 rifles, ie. the beginner big bores. Let’s resurrect this 20-year-old topic and breathe some life back into the BIG BORE forum! What 0.500”+ rifle projects have you been working on?
I currently have:
505 Gibbs Bolt
577 3” Single Shot
7-bore Blunderbuss
500 Linebaugh revolver
I built my 577 nitro 3” to serve as a light nitro rifle. I planned for 650gr Woodleigh or hard cast bullets at 1950fps. I proofed the gun with full nitro 750gr rounds. In working up my loads, I got the 650gr woodleighs and Hawks going over 2100fps. I look forward to owning and hunting with a 577 double rifle of some description in the next year or two. If I end up building it myself, I will regulate it for 650gr Woodleigh softs and 600-650gr monolithic solids at 2150fps.
In the works:
8-bore Jones underlever double rifle
8-bore Jones underlever single shot rifle
500 Nitro Double rifle
50 WSM single shot bolt action suppressed
A couple of years ago, I picked up a London proofed Jones underlever 8-bore double shotgun at auction. The gun is with Aaron Little now having a rifled barrel set made for it. The barrels were custom made with a 0.850” groove diameter and a 0.840” bore diameter. Eleven lands and grooves and one turn in 60 inches. It will be regulated with a 1335gr cast bullet from a custom mold at 1350fps. With smokeless powder, that load will generate less than 17kpsi chamber pressure.
I am building the single shot myself. It will fire the same load as the double but should be more flexible in testing out different projectiles. I am building the action over-sized and I might build a second barrel in 4-bore as a smooth bore for round ball loads and huge charges of buckshot and birdshot, just for fun.

Man, a 600OK mountain rifle!
What does lightweight mean in this instance? What barrel length?
If you are interested, I have a super light McGowan 0.505 barrel blank for sale, cheap! I figure you might need a light rifle for caribou.

Michael RobinsonI guess I missed this train the last couple of times it passed through town.
But I always get on and get off at the same stop, no matter when.
.500 A-Square!
It’s the best of the fifties and bigger, at least for hunting, which is all I do with mine.
Taking my big fifty to Botswana in a couple of weeks after Cape buffalo.
It paralyzes them.

That cartridge sounds pretty good to me.
Personally, I built a 500 Accurate Reloading (Nyati) designed by Jefeoso on this forum.
It is a fantastic cartridge that can be fit into a normal Ruger M77 Hawkeye. A Rigby case cut down to 2.65" to fit in the Hawkeye. That means carrying 500 Jeffrey ballistics in a 8.5-lb rifle.
