oh yeah, I guess I get another gold star on my paper today...ran a quad-fifty on the back of a deuce and a half one evening just east of Chu-Lai, RVN back in 1969. Ever see a truck skid backwards? Impressive with those pinkish-red tracer trails arcing out overhead.

This is the kind of post I like to see.
It makes everybody else look like a pretender...! Wink
What was the target?

Kidding aside, I just stopped in to see what was cooking on the site.
Always something cool and interesting!

Hi Frank,

I used the S&W X-Frame revolver (8 5/8" bbl) with either a Bushnell Elite 3200 scope or an EOTech holograffic sight. Both are excellent and hold up to the recoil of the hot 440 gr. hard cast bullets. Used the 330 gr. on PG, which were all DRT. Zeroed at 50 yards and confirmed POI at 100 yards.

Hope this helps.

Mine are .500 caliber, not .510. Yes, I have hunted fairly extensively with mine. Winchester M70 50 B&M 18 inch barrel, 510 gr Solids and 470 gr HPs, I have taken 2 elephant, 5 cape buffalo, eland, giraffe, several wildebeast-zebra-impala-oryx, grizzly bear and more. Winchester M70 500 MDM 21 inch barrel 510 Solids at 2350 and 470 HPs at 2420 fps 13 Australian buffalo last september. I have not taken the levers and the tiny 50 Super Short to the field yet, but others have.

Michael,

Impressive list. In your experience which is tougher the cape buffalo or the water buffalo?
21 February 2010, 19:01
michael458
Tougher? Well, both of them are big bovines, one about as tough as the other in general, absolutely depending on the "individual" regardless of species I think. I have had some really tough customers on both that soaked up bullets like sponges, and I dearly love to fill'em full of holes. One single big big prime Aussie Bull ranks as one of the toughest for sure of all I have shot between the two, taking 4 big hits from my 500 MDM, going down each time, getting back up each time. All the rest shot with it hit the dirt and did not get back up.

The very toughest bovine I dealt with was one big South Dakota Bison! I only shot two, one took a big nose dive after only 3 rounds. Shooting a 45/70 425 gr cast bullets at 2000 fps from an 1886 Winchester. The other took 5 total hits, 4 of which all were in the chest cavity, went down for the count (or so I thought) we position him for photos, rifle in front, me behind, busy taking photos, I detected a bit of movement, then I saw warm air blowing out of the nostrils!!!!! Damn thing was coming back to life! Jumped up, grabbed rifle, jacked a round in, at a matter of inches shot him in the neck! This time it was official! LOL. What a hoot!

Big Aussie Prime Bull!

The second round of photos with the "Zombie Bison" Notice I am still holding on to the rifle this time! Would the 500 MDM had done better? Personally I think so. But when shooting bison I wanted to be a "little" more traditional, so settled for 1886 lever gun. Next bison will be with a Winchester M71 in the mighty 50 B&M Alaskan, 500 gr Hornady at 2000 fps!
