I have a 1973 Super Grade push feed 458 win mag .I was wondering if its worth changing to a 458 lott or not?I might just sell it instead of fooling with it at all.The 458 win mag brass is getting hard as heck to find and the 458 lott brass is not much easier to find.I usually only fool with the 416 rem mag.Has anyone fooled with any of the pointed barnes 458 bullets in the 458 win mag or lott?

If it was my rifle I would make the conversion. Keep in mind that you dont have to load up to full power Lott loads. You could just load to the original 458wm specs but get there without powder compaction and less pressure. Then if you feel you need more you can always load it up.

Do you have to change the magazine box?I wondered about that.

It might not be worth the trouble on that model. I'm not a M70 guru but the push feed's action window might not be long enough without some major work. My 2001 Safari Classic .458 Win has the same length window as a .375 and came with a filler in the mag box. It only required a .375 mag box, 1/4" off the bolt stop, and chamber reaming to convert to Lott. If you can get 2150 with 500 grainers, you may as well keep it in Winnie or start completely over. I've just started to monkey with 450TSX's and already don't like the length. I'm anticipating the need to trim back a batch of brass to be able to roll crimp into the first relief groove. They haven't shot all that fast or accurate yet either. Still have 200 to play with so I won't rule them out yet.

A lot of guys sing the praises of the 458 Lott.....yet at the very same time they also praise the 470 Nitro shooting a 500 grain slup at the same speed as the 458 Win Mag..... It beats me for sure..... I agree with the poster that says to make the conversion and load to the slower round for practice.....just because you have the "Lott" chamber don't mean you have to use it.....the Lott will also handle the standard 458 win mag rounds as well. /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// "Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." Yes, on Vapodogs comments. Playing with a 458wm, there is lots of velocity available, within book. JPK Free 500grains

if it were mine, there's NO way I would make the mods. I would sell the supergrade, buy a barreled action from montana or a whole gun from cz, stock it, sights, blue... the lott can be loaded down to the 458 winmag, and with clever OAL, you can even use the same amount out powder (think wadcutter).... the win can't be loaded up to the lott.. but, honestly, if you aren't going to africa or shoot big exotics, or you are just shooting in N.A.... remington 405 at 2200 are all you'll ever need jeffe opinions vary band of bubbas and STC hunting Club Information on Ammoguide about the416AR, 458AR, 470AR, 500AR What is an AR round? I agree with Jeffe, besides those rifles are too light in 458 win. In a Lott they will likely split the stock or knock you goofy.

Is it worth the recoil going from a 458 Win Mag to a 458 LOTT? ..................YES........... ....Mac >>>===(x)===> MacD37, ...and DUGABOY1 DRSS Charter member "If I die today, I've had a life well spent, for I've been to see the Elephant, and smelled the smoke of Africa!"~ME 1982 Hands of Old Elmer Keith

The M70 magazine assembly might fail. I've heard/read of this happening with Lott conversions. I built a Lott on a 375 LH action using a Krieger barrel and Blackburn bottom metal. Lots of other niceties, but used the Winchester stock. Total with Leu 1.5 x 5 is 10.5 pounds. Very satisfactory rifle.
