I finally got to blood my 416 Rem. I was shooting a Barnes 350 TSX over 73 Grains of Rel. 15 and was hopeing to get a big hog on this combo hunt on Ossabaw island here in Georgia. Unfortunately the island was literally covered with acorns, looked like a carpet in places, so the hogs stayed in the marsh until the end of the day then came to the edge of dry land and ate their fill in a matter of minutes then returned to the high grass to sleep. On the final day I shot a 2 1/2 year old 6 point buck at 60 yards that weighed 100 pounds. He was facing me and dropped at the shot. The bullet entered at the point of his left should broke the leg bone(distroyed the shoulder meat with bone fragments) and continued on back through his stomach and belly, broke his left rear leg at the ball joint and continued into his ham. I was surprised to find the bullet just barely poking out of the hide on his butt. It had all four petals fully expanded to a diameter of .810" and weighed 350 grains. The rear meat wasn't bloodshot and I'll be able to pick the bone out and eat up to the hole, the front shoulder wasn't worth saving, about the same damage as an '06 would do. I think this load will do for plains game in Africa though I wonder about using it as a soft for buffalo. I'll have to chrono it and if under 2500 see if I can boost it a bit to enhance penetration. On the whole I'm happy with the bullets performance on light game.

Cool deal. Some people would scoff at shooting a 100 lb. deer with a .416, but then they forget some of us shoot rockchucks with a 300 gr. .338 cal Sierra Matchking. lol

I've used a .375 H&H and believe it's not as effective as the old .270 class of venison harvestor.

I am rather intrigued shooting a deer with a big bore. What I do not understand is why you would shoot a 2 1/2 yr old 6 point!!! Too young, especially for a 416! Roll Eyes

This was a control hunt to thin the population. They have three hunts each year with 100 people each and tell everyone, and I quote, if it's brown it's down. And as was noted before they taste good.

I hunt with my 416 Rem Mag, but haven't scored with it yet. Gonna carry it to my secret spot next year loaded with Speer 285 gr GS's. I shot a six pointer with my 375/284 and never asked how old it was before I fired. Biologist told me it was 3 1/2 yrs old. Yum-ate some chili made with it today.

I pretty much exclusively hunt with big bores for the last several years... and if you include 35s, that's 85% of my hunting for the last 10-12 years.

416s on game this small bores, don't do the awesome meat damage, and always exit. Butch Searcy told me, about 5 years ago , on the 416 rem "everyone needs a varmit gun"... and today I have a prespective that allows me to understand what he was saying.

put a hornady 400gr right ON the shoulder... DRT

Congrats on blooding your 416, enjoy the meat! I blooded one of my CZ550s (6.5x55) this year with a yearling buck and a doe. I might take the my other CZ550, 375 H&H, for S&Gs next year.

From a 338 Lapua, right? If I had a 416 or 45 caliber weapon, I'd use it. I use a 375 RUM right now.

Lewis50,
I agree with your conclusion on the 350 TSX. I have found the TSX Barnes to very accurate and a great performer on medium game however I would not consider a TSX for something such as cape Buffalo. The conventional Barnes X seems to penetrate much deeper than the TSX (my experience).
I have shot conventional .416 300grain X bullets from stem to stern on a few black bear and numerous moose. I have never recovered a .338 225 grain X (conventional) from moose, elk, deer, and bears. This year I recovered (all picture perfect) 2-225gr (.338) and 1-270gr .375 TSX? I will spare you the details but at the shot angles taken a normal X would be gone.

I am curious if others share my experience?

I've used my .416 Rem on a number of hogs. I figure there's no better practice than on live game......

x-man,
Thats' interesting, the difference in penetration between two very similar bullets, the TSX and regular X. I wonder if the velocity at impact is the difference? The Barnes folks state that you may need up to two extra grains of powder to reach the same velocity with the TSX as with the X. Have you chrono'd your loads or do you think the TSX expands quicker and/or holds together better (doesn't lose its' petals) than the original X thus limiting it's penetration?

Lewis50,
I think the new tsx is too good!
The petals don't seem to blow off like the old style X which (I believe) is what is inhibiting penetration.

The Tsx seems to kill as well if not quicker than the old X, but I prefer an exit hole because it leaks better than the entrance. I think this is important stuff when you hunt large or dangerous game.

I also think the hole configuration is slightly different in the Tsx, but I have no proof of this.

I have checked the velocity (always do) and any differences are insignificant.

I have shot several deer with a Rigby. All with 350gr Speer mag tips. All one shot. I just bought some 350tsx and loaded a starter load in my Rigby of 97gr H-4350. I chronoed this load at 2710 fps. I was expecting 2550 in my gun from all the info out there on these bullets they should be slower not faster with the same load compared to regular x's.

Lewis50,

Congratulations on your Ossabaw trophy. My close friends were there for the December hunt too. I couldn't find an old single reject card to go with my level 2 so had to stay behind. I would have carried my bigbore(375) as well and would have liked to meet you. The TSX sounds nice, I am loading some for my H&H.

Congrats.

I shot a load of whitetail does a few years back with the .416. The animals were DRT with minimal meat damage.

Best,

John
