Having trouble getting Swift Aframes 300gr to group. Best group is a 2.5 inch and 77gr of H414 2550 fps. The same load with Barnes RN solids, the old type with no bands, will go into an inch.

I have some Reloader 19 on the shelf. Anyone got a good RL19 load with the 300gr Swifts?

Sorry Deerdogs I know this isn't what you asked, and I see you're in Dubai so I wouldn't know if you can get it but I believe R-15 is widely considered to be the go to powder by the fellers here at AR.

R-15 is what I use for the 300g bullets and it is accurate.

Sorry, but I use W760 for both types of bullets.

George, aren't H414 & W760 the same powder with different labels; or is that your point, it works for you

Only a helpful suggestion.
Don't know what kind of rifle you are shooting
and twist in the barrel but clean it real well especially if you have been shooting Barnes. Get all the copper out.

Then try 72 gr RL#17 with a Fed215 primer.
This is a great load at about 2500 fps in my
24 inch guns. RL#17 is close in burning rate to 4350 and doesn't over stuff the case. I have used 300gr Hornadys, North Forks, Swifts, Noslers and some Barnes. They all did real well.

Hope this is some help.
Good Shooting

I have not shot this load but the Swift Reloading Manual Number One shows the following info with RL 19.

300gr Swift bullet
Start load 73.9gr. 2350fps
Max load 79.5gr. 2583fps

The Max load shows 102% density, ie slightly compressed.

Hope this helps.

I have had two 375 H&Hs over the years. Both shot into 1 1/2 minute of angle using either Hornady 300 grain RNSP or Hornady solids. Nosler 300 grain Partitions also grouped right with them. I use H-4350 for all loads with enough powder to give just over 2,500 fps.

I've gone to H4350 as my got-to powder in the .375. Haven't tried Swifts but I'm MOA with 300 Partitions and 300SGK's over 75gr. of H4350. That's the "soft load" that delivers 2400fps from a 20" tube.

Robert

My M70, one of the new South Carolina guns, loves 300gr A-Frames being pushed by 78gr of IMR4350 if you can get that.

That is 1.5gr ABOVE the max load recommended from Swift, so I'd probably start at 75gr and work up with your rifle. However I have had no signs of high pressure at 78gr.

That load routinely shoot 3 shots at 100 yards creating one ragged hole, typically groups are 0.75" center to center.

CT Mod 70 late 2005 purchase...1500-odd rounds of 300 Hornady Interlocks/Interbonds/A Frames to less than MOA at 100 using 76.5 grs IMR 4350, RP brass, and either CCI or Winchester primers. 2550 fps avg. That is max book load in the Swift manual. Grain for grain, it takes less IMR powder that Hodgdon to provide the same velocity. I have tried both RE-19 and H 4350 and neither matched the accuracy of the IMR powder in my rifle.

There has been some bad carma on Swifts as to accuracy by some folks. Some claim they are soft and grab the rifleing?

I have never had best accuracy with them in any calibers I have owned..I mean by that most shot OK, but I got better accuracy with other bullets..I have had best accuracy with Noslers contrary to what many have reported on AR..guess its a crap shoot, and proves all guns are individuals.

I made a 300+ yd one-shot kill on a Nyassa wildebeest in the Selous with a 300 A Frame. I have taken at least a dozen head of African game including two buff with the A Frame from 20 to over 300 yds and have never, repeat never , had a problem. No brag. Just fact.

Using my old Browning A Bolt 7mm Rem mag and the no longer loaded Remington Safari Grade 160 grain A Frame, I had nine out of eleven one shot kills in RSA on a ranch hunt in 2005, including a DRT gemsbok at 350+.

We can discuss bullet effectiveness and accuracy until the cows come home. I use what works for me and that is the Swift A Frame.

Your mileage may vary.

My custom Mdl 70 SS shoots Noslers of all weights and Woodleigh solids with equal accuracy. My best group was 20 rounds takig no particular cooling efforts into .7". It will not shoot Swifts nor will my 30-06 so I really don't try them. The Mdl 70 is a factory barrel and the 30-06 is a Kreiger if that makes much difference. Just something about Swifts that aren't particulary accurate for me. I use primarily IMR4350 for a powder for everything it will work in. I'm not much for experimenting, I just look for the most accurate load I can find which is usually well below maximum. I have found I have no problem killing with them.

Zimbabwe,
I do believe that Swifts shoot better in a broached barrel such as a Douglas, as opposed to cut rifled barrel such as a Krieger, and that may be the difference..I have found that to be true in guns I have owned, but I have done no scientific study on it and it could just be prue circumstance.

I use RL15 with 250gr and 270gr but the go to powder for 300gr bullets is W760 in both of my 375's.

The Remington loaded 160 A Frame won't shoot at all in my Krieger-barreled Dakota 76 7mm mag, but the Federal 160 TSX will shoot dime size groups. So you may be right. Of course, handloaded 168 Bergers shoot .342 five round groups and hand loaded 140 A Frames shoot .652 using IMR 7828. Go figger

Have you played with seating depth yet? How far from the lands are you seating your bullet? I typically seat my bullets 1/10" from the lands. If your bullet is touching the lands, sometimes pressures get unpredictable and bullets won't group at all, then again some rifles / bullet combos like the bullet to be just "kissing" the lands. The 250g Swift A-Frames 3/4" groups in my CZ 550 375 H&H and the Rem Factory 375 H&H 300g Swift A-Frames are shooting sub MOA in my Rem XCR II.

Chuck
