I have been thniking on to use the 500 grain woodleigh rn in my .460 wby this year.. For moose and bear. Do you guys think it will hold togheter at 2650 FPS?? if it hit bones? How do you think the penetration will be?? enough? //OK

I know that they have a recommended max velocity around 2300 fps? But I want to use a bullet that really open up even if it only hit soft tissue like behind the shoulder shots! But I am afraid that it maybe will come apart if it hit bones? I remember that I have read that atkinson used the 500 grain woodleigh at 2400 FPS in a .458 lott on buffalo? but 2650-2700 FPS is amaybe to much or?? Any other recommended .458 bullet that will expand fast and not loose so much weight?? //OK

I believe that is impact velocity. So, if it is a "longer" shot velocity should be down in acceptable level. But, if you end up having to take the shot at close range potential for serious problem. I would avoid the risk and use a preimium bullet designed for the big bee velocity.

unless you want a bomb, dont, though their protected points are designed for higher impact speed my experience is that the max recommended speed is the max, or they turn inside out. lets be serious for a second, and elk/moose isn't going to "care" if the bullet turns inside out 6 or 12 inches into them, they will be drt opinions vary band of bubbas and STC hunting Club Information on Ammoguide about the416AR, 458AR, 470AR, 500AR What is an AR round? I agree if you have bullet failure on elk/moose he is gone never to be seen again. However, if you have bullet failure on bear you will see him again, up close and personal. Then the problem magnifies expodentially.

bullet failure, in this catagory, is a .458 500 gr BOMB going off inside, rather then complete pass through.. that was my point, the bullet will turn inside out, and cause a HUGE amount of damage.. the elk/moose will DRT (dead right there) i don't hunt bears, and hope to never have to be there. OK's bears aren't griz or kodiaks or polars... they are european bears.. that are killed with the 6.5 for decades opinions vary band of bubbas and STC hunting Club Information on Ammoguide about the416AR, 458AR, 470AR, 500AR What is an AR round? Stop in at Norma and pick up some woodleigh 550grn that they load for the African PH ammo. will bring velocity down to a speed where it will open impressively and may not disintegrate on a bone. At .460 speeds the 500grn Barnes TSX's loose petals on buff. True, a moose or brown bear isn't a buff, but...go stronger, go heaver or download!

"Why anyone would believe that this guy even owns a gun is beyond me. He's been jerking your chains for years. Roll Eyes George" "Thanks George. A bit embarrassing Mad I did not know that about Overkill from Sweden. I thought jeffeosso would have been on to that Confused" "Jeff, Watch out. You're turning into a "people person". Big Grin" George "Poor old Overkill from Sweden provided a good laugh on this thread. rotflmo" For the first.. my english is not good. And when I found AR on the internet I was 12 years old.. maybe 13. And I asked dumb and silly questions.. and when i was 15 1/2 years old I got my .460 wby.. and still not "grown up" After that almost every one on the AR think that I am a troll or what you call it. Of course only RGB does belive me I think But I would say that I am not a troll!!! I do own a .460 wby and have been hunting moose with it since I have been 15 1/2 years old and I have only used the factory 500 grain hornady ammo. Now I would want to use another bullet.. that expands big and make much damage, but not to be a bomd if it hits bones. As jeffeosso said "lets be serious for a second, and elk/moose isn't going to "care" if the bullet turns inside out 6 or 12 inches into them, they will be drt" I only hunt moose and bear with it.. and the bears here in sweden ar not as big as in alaska. I think that the swift a-frame would be to hard and expand very little in a swedish moose or bear.. and the hornady that I have used is not bonded.. thats the reason I think about woodleigh! //Overkill from sweden! not a troll!!!

He's always good for a few chuckles. Doesnt harm anyone. There was a legitimate Overkill from Sweden about 8 years ago but I dont think this is him. He would be 23 1/2 now and still asking the same questions. Isnt it amazing how certain trolls show up in groups kinda all at once? Yes I think it will hold together. I have some loaded for my 458 Lott. I tried one on a 6" piece of solid oak they went right threw and kept on going. It was a little hole going in and a larger about three bullet sizes going out. It was a Soft point.

Overkill I am going to take you at your word and believe you from your post above as to who and what you are. I am also going to give you some very good advice concerning a bullet for moose, bear, and what have you that you will hunt in your area. While the 500 Woodleigh will do just fine, slow it down to 2200-2300 fps at max-it will do a fine job. Better still forget the 500 gr bullets for this mission. If it were me I would be looking very hard at the 400 gr Swift A Frame-run it about 2400 fps or so-less recoil, pleasant to shoot-and will absolutely hammer moose, elk, bear. You don't need more velocity, bullet will expand perfectly, and do a great job. Other bullets you could look at is a 400 Woodleigh-but do not run it faster than 2200 fps! It will hold together, but do it's best to fold over itself at impacts above 2150 fps. I would also look at the 350 Barnes X-can run it up in the 2500 fps range and it will do great for the mission at hand! You don't need a 500 for this sort of work--I know that as I have been there done it! So start looking into lighter bullets for this work, it will do better for you and the mission at hand. So use the 500gr Trophy Bonded Bear claw Bullets. They work just about perfect out of my .460 Weath. Even with fullhouseloads.
