BigFiveJackWFF HEIN - 450 Dakota Rifle In It's New Owner's Possession
Well guys,
The WFF HEIN built 450 Dakota calibered rifle I put up for sale
here has reached it's new owner and he reports complete satisfaction.
He's not yet fired her up but is excited about doing so.
I am happy for him, and for his sake I hope he does NOT get the double bug as I did.

If that happens the next owner of this rifle will get the deal of the century...

shootawayIf you love your rifles why sell them?
16 December 2006, 13:58
WhitworthIn the past I have sold rifles to make way or to finance other rifle purchases -- but only if I feel no real attachment to the rifle...... I understand needing to sell sometimes as life dictates such cruelty (

), but, the rifles I have in my safe now I don't think I'll ever sell.
I hope the new owner enjoys his new rifle!

500grainsSelling a fine rifle is a noble thing to do. It allows the new owner to have great enjoyment from a rifle you love, and it lets you play with another fine rifle. A couple of years ago I sold $20K worth of rifles and promptly went out and shot 3 elephants and a bunch of plains game with the money.

WhitworthDan, I can't think of a better use of the money gained by selling your rifles! It's nice having rifles in your safe, even nicer using them for their intended purpose!

Idaho Sharpshootera thought; it is hard to get emotionally attached to a synthetic stocked rifle. Not disparaging them at all.

Good thought Dan!

BigFiveJackTo answer 577NitroExpress,
For over a year now I have heard RUSTY, 400NitroExpress and others tout the
450/400 calibered U.K. built rifles with 26 inch bbls at about 9.5 pounds weight.
Some others have also written about such a rifle with a very low mounted [in a claw mount],
low power, top grade, Austrian scope as being the ultimate all around use rifle.
I have concluded that these men collectively are
CORRECT!So that is what I seek. I know finding one at that weight will NOT be easy.
I might have to accept one at 10.5 pounds. If that is the case then that is what destiny
has in store for me. It's just good to have finally
DECIDED!!!
And now I am hearing Hornady is to market the 3" Jeffery version ammo, another plus.

Glad to hear you have made a decision.
Now, no second guessing! I think your choice is very sound for your first DR! (I.e., get the 4 bore as your SECOND DR!)
Now, head to SCI and DSC and give George at Champlin's a call - tell him what you are looking for and to give you a call when he finds something within your description and budget.

BigFiveJackTo IdahoSS,
Yes a synthetic stocked rifle can
take a hold on a man's "heart".
How?
By being used in memorable hunts
or by representing the dream of
going on exciting hunts in the future.
So if a guy sells such a rifle as
I just did, he can feel a bit of
remorse over it. I am right now.
But I know I will replace it with
one that I will favor even more.
And the new owner of this .45 caliber
Hein will shoot a Cape Buff with it
about 18 months from now!

Idaho SharpshooterI am comforted by the thought that you can run your fingers across the slinky curves, feel the bite of the impressed checkering/molding, become lost in the silky thousand-toned blackness of a plastic stock. In the same way appreciate the myriad shades of grey highlighted by softly glowing or shining notches where subtle radii or curves were milled from a block of stainless.
Me, I'll make do with fine walnut and blued and casehardened steel with an intricate pattern of carving and/or checkering done by hand.
When H&H or Westley Richards, or Purdey or Butch Searcy start offering double rifles in SS/Plastic
stocks, call me.

458WinOne can become quite fond of a synthetic stocked rifle that always goes bang when you need it, handles like a dream and has saved his bacon on numerous occasions.

I have come to resent the frailties of walnut and would prefer a quality synthetic stock (not an oxymoron by any stretch of the imagination) anytime. Not prissy for walnut here.

Sir, I resent that remark. I never played with dolls in my life.
Truth hurts, eh Forrest?

Idaho SharpshooterRIP,
ForrestB said to tell you to save your breath...you'll need it to blow up your Christmas date!!!
Well, maybe not really, but it is one of the 14,000 (+1) he meant to post but didn't!!
I feel sad for you, this means you'll never have the joy of ownership of a good double rifle.

Idaho Sharpshooter458 Win,
what effect does stock material have on making a rifle go bang every time, handle, or saving one's bacon?
I am left curious how wars were fought with funky old wood stocked, blued/parkerized steel bolt action rifles...? Oops!! Inclement weather, no killing until it clears up. We'll use one of the make up days.

our meteorologist informs me that rain is scheduled for tomorrow and the rest of the week. This wreaks havoc with bowstrings, and is also not good for your wooden stocks. Can we re-schedule for late June? See how the 26th looks for you. Good here.

ISS, my dear blowhard friend,
I own two double rifles with walnut stocks, and many other bolt actions, single shots and various shotguns that have walnut stocks, some quite fine. I tolerate this, just like I do the slow twists, but knowing the truth has set me free.
Stainless and synthetic and twists fast enough for the longest practical monometals is where it is at.
There are some Searcy double rifles in stainless and synthetic, BTW. Judging by your previous post you were not aware of this?
Now back to the regular hot zephyrs blowing out of Idaho: Your turn.

BigFiveJackForestB,
What you said above gave me a chuckle

The rifle I sold would have been 2K or more higher priced with a nice piece of wood instead of the very reliable McMillan synthetic stock.
I am just a middle class guy and if I could save 2K or more on a NEW SxS from HEYM for example, I for one would choose to go synthetic.
