thanks to a couple of good guys here on AR i have all the reloading data i need to start working up some loads for my rifle.(thanks guys) in the data i recieved it says that 45 grns of accurate 5744 will fill the case 75% full and generate 52500 psi with the 350 grn speer bullet. i have about 70-80, 350 grn, gas checked cast bullets. i don't want 52500 psi but more like 47000-48000. my question is...what is the minimum charge of 5744 with this bullet? anything that fills the case 50% or more? that would work out to approx 30 grns as a minimum. just looking for a cheap fun load for me and the kids to play with so don't really care about velocity(1800-2000 fps??) looking for opinions from you guys with some experience shooting reduced loads with fast powders and cast bullets in these large bore cartridges. thanks for any advice. blaming guns for crime is like blaming silverware for rosie o'donnell being fat

Budiceale: Something is haywire here. I used to load 50 grains of XMP57344 under the RCBS 350-grain GC cast bullet for a leisurely and accurate 2,000 fps in a Ruger No. 1 in .416 Rigby. I suggest you e-mail the guys at Accurate with your question. In my experience, they have been very helpful. There is hope, even when your brain tells you there isn’t. – John Green, author

Accurate lists low pressure 45-70 loads using 5744 down to 50% fill and 14,000 psi. As usual just my $.02 Paul K

I have loaded 5744 as low as 8 grains in a 348 and 10 grains in a 45-70, both with round ball plinking/small gfame loads. Both very accurate for the purpose. In a contact with Accurate they didn't seem concerned at reducing 5744 as far I needed to go to get what I wanted. stocker

jeffe: Trail boss is a good idea but was not available when I used the much reduced 5744 load development for round ball. stocker

Guys, I load a 400 gr cast GC projectile in the .416 Aagard with 35 gr of AA5744 and get 1600 fps. Very often also get cloverleaf groups with the load. I came to the conclusion that AA5744 was good to try here as Butch Searcy recommended 45 gr of AA5744 behind a 500 gr cast bullet in 470 NE which has a MUCH larger case volume. I was under the impression that AA5744 was intended for relatively low volume percentage fills. Am I missing something here?
