600 Nitro Savage 220? Login/Join

Several years ago, there was a discussion about rebarreling a Savage 220, 20 gauge into a 600 Nitro.

The thought was that it was the cheapest way to get a 600, that wasn't a single shot.

At the time, I was wondering if the magazine box had the necessary length.

Did anyone actually build one of these?

The 219 and the 220 Savage have no magazine box they are single shot break open guns in 22 Hornet, 30-30 qnd 25-20. the 220 is the same but in shotgun calibers! Surely you jest?

No, Ray - the 220 is a bolt action slug gun. no relation to the 219, not a break action.

Ed Hubel of 12ga FH fame estimates the Savage 210 as being good for 35,000 PSI, if that helps.

The strength of the 220 was never questioned.

My understanding is that the 220 is just the Savage 110 rifle action, scaled up.

The interesting thing is that with the 220, you have a 'rifle' that is big enough for
the 600 Nitro, without the expense of something like the Heym 600 bolt gun.

The thought was, just a rebarrel would do it. The bolt face and extractor, could handle the 600 with little or no modification, and the magazine was wide enough, but
I was wondering, at the time, if it was long enough.

Sadly, I don't remember who it was that started the topic.

What is it good for? I mean bolt action rifle in .600 Nitro Express? For rimmed cartridge designed for break open rifles.

Just my opinion.

What's it good for?

I guess you have to be a big fan of the 600 Nitro to understand the appeal of a
3 shot bolt action 600 that you can build for well under $2000.

The guy that came up with the idea envisioned a price of about $1500, for the
Savage 220, the new 600 barrel, a die set, and a supply of brass - If I remember correctly.

The Heym 600 bolt action was about $10,000, at the time.

That $1500 price tag got my attention.

Interesting concept - but, I don't know if it worked in reality.

Ed Hubel did some cool projects, converting the Savage 220 to a big bore was one of them. He also converted the H&R SB2 frame 10 ga shotgun to 577NE. It worked like a charm. He helped me make one up and I killed 5 cape buffalo with it. It is a hammer!

I still have it along with 100 rounds of cartridges loaded with 700 grain Peregrine Bushmaster bullets at 1,800 fps MV. Weighs 12 lbs and is very nice to shoot.
It is up for sale.

Thanks Luke,

I should add that I have three big bore barrels on a H&R Handi rifle SB2 frame, a 577 NE, a 50-110 Win and a 444 marlin, and three on a TC Encore, 50-110Win, 45-70 and 500S&W, I have restocked both of them for a better fit and less recoil. They make a handy carbine length rifle. Hunting cape buffalo with a single shot rifle focuses the mind. (chuckle) Brian
