Thanks Boomie! It was great (see African Hunting reports - added the Buffalo hunt description to photos there).

report on Big Bores used:

600 Overkill:
First shot with AHR X-Bullet - entered behind left shoulder, exploded lungs and penetrated to shatter right shoulder dropping Cape Buffalo.
Got up on three legs to charge and put RGB Copper Bore Rider through right neck to shatter left shoulder dropping him again. Put a Macifej Shark Solid through chest to finish him off and two more for good measure afterwards. Both passed through.

585 AHR:
AHR X-Bullet through left face penetrated to just under skin of right shoulder which put it down immediately.
The second was a Barnes Banded which passed through and might still be flying now.

Tremendous internal destruction to vital organs and bone structure by a variety of bullets out of the mighty 600 OK and 585 AHR.

What I saw first hand (and you already knew)is that a Cape Buffalo can absorb tons of energy, suffer debilitating injury and have no functional internal organs yet still take vengence on whomever he chooses - and sometimes succeed in exacting it. Nearly happened to me!

CCMDoc- well done! Did you recover some bullets? Any pics? Sounds like a lot if fun. You did well standing a charge on your first buff. It doesn't get better than that! Say Hi to you dad too!-Rob

Hi Rob,

Your Copper Bore Rider and Jay's Shark zipped right on through smashing everything in the way regardless of what it was (such as scapula and other bone).

I did recover the .585 and .620 AHR X-Bullets and will take and post pictures when I can (assuming I can get dad's .585 from him for a moment). The .620 was about double in diameter and the .585 was probably about .700 when all is said and done.

I will pass on your welcome to dad - he is the hero of Howland Hook terminal (still working as a longshoreman there).

We need some tougher targets Rob!! You're in the bioengineering know ... maybe you can check on the status of the T-Rex Redux ...???

Macifej- I know, I Know. I was going to sell hunts for T-Rex's and Mammoths on the RGB ranch in Mendocino. Just gotta get some decent DNA.
Paul- Sounds like an exciting hunt! Much better than the wack and drop variety! You did well my friend! Darn I was hoping that Copper bore rider would mushroom and stop where you could find it. Guess the guys who think a .600 wont penetrate will be eaten some crow now won't they. Seems like you were also able to deal with the incredible recoil well enough for 3 shots too. WOW! could the pundits be wrong again?-Rob

I am sure your CBR mushroomed very nicely as the exit hole was fist-sized. If there were another two or three buffalo behind it, one might have caught the bullet for us. Then again, I would have some hefty fines to pay, especially if they were cows.

I can't say I remember any recoil and as far as fast shooting - I practiced doing that a lot with the 600 before going. I liken three fast, accurate shots with the 600OK to rowing a boat - fast and smooth.

I watched my dad out of the corner of my eye do exactly the same with the 585 AHR.

LOVE these AHR-built rifles and LOVE the calibers. Wonder if i should use them on PA whitetails in November

I should add, along the recoil line of thinking, that your 900gr Copper Bore Rider and Jay's 900gr Brass Shark were loaded to 2,230fps and 2,215fps respectively and the AHR 800gr X-Bullet to 2,287fps (as averaged over the Oehler 35P - thank goodness the screens are still available!). Not squib loads by most men's measure.

I was not using AHR's fantastic X-Brake on my 600 though dad was using it on his 585. Good stock design and 11lb weight worked great.

Unfortunately no - I was too excited and wasn't thinking all that far ahead after he was down.

Exit holes were the subject of great enthusiasm and laughter (based upon hand gestures among the crew as I don't speak Ndebele).

Next time I'll make sure I get some!

Nope - couldnt be smoother! 600 OK, 585 AHRand all ammo made the trip there and back with nary a wobble . I kept thinking about you and the 4-bore ammo experience though!!! If my ammo was confiscated on the return, I wouldnt have put up much of a fuss though as long as the rifles got home.
