Some of you may remember all of my newbie questions on having a custom rifle build when I had my express'like 6.5X55 built on the MRC SA. The gun is amazing and shoots even better. Well I want to make a twin, but in 376 Steyr. Right now I cannot get the search engine on here to work and I keep getting an error message, so I will just ask a few questions: **Who was it on here who has a 376 Steyr made on the MRC SA [short action]? **Where can I find the schematics for the cartridge, and what case was it based off of? **As a North American DG rifle and a heavier game rifle in Africa [not DG I would be using a 40 plus caliber], what should I be worried about? D This is the 1st rifle, the 6.5X55...

IIRC the 376 is based off of a shortened 9.3x64 Brenneke If you think every possible niche has been filled already, thank a wildcatter!

My MRC 376 still needs a stock to finish it; I am thinking of a synthetic. There was (is) an excellent 376 article in African Hunter by the late Eric Ching. He was able to safely achieve 2300 fps with 300 grain bullets in a Steyr Scout 20" barrel. That is good medicine for anything you want to hunt. If the rule of thumb holds true, that would be over 2400 in a 22" or 24" barrel. "Experience" is the only class you take where the exam comes before the lesson.

I have a 22" "plain Jane" .376 Steyr utility rifle in progress. Will be on a 1909 Argentine action. Will have custom mounts and a Timney trigger. Is for heavier North American game as I have heavier rifles for African DG. Was looking for a light to moderate big bore for piggies and bear of all sorts. If it were finished I would seriously consider taking it to Africa for plains game. Have gotten good reports on the 225 gr Hornady bullet and the TSXs in this chambering. Hey- Jeffe/Tigertate- You guys remember Night shooting Piggies with the .376 Steyr on our second Tesas hunt? That was a good shooting gun. Neal and I nailed a pig at night off the trucks hood with a flashlight at near 200yrds. Right off the nose of a $15000 prize bull while the piggie was feeding. The croatian guide nearly had a heart attack!-Rob Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large numbers to do incredibly stupid things- AH (1941)- Harry Reid (aka Smeagle) 2012 Nothing Up my sleeves but never without a plan and never ever without a surprise!

TIGGERTATE Do you feel the 376 Steyr is a good fit to the SA MRC action or is it pushing it? I know it requires additional fitting, but my MRC action is so damned nice after Jim Dubell got done with it I could not force myself to use another action.

The MRC "short" is perfect for the 376. It really belongs in the "intermediate" class; it is a lot bigger than most short actions. It's also probably the heaviest short action ever made, so it works well for the stouter rounds. You will need to open the bolt face and have some feed work done. "Experience" is the only class you take where the exam comes before the lesson.

333 OKH wanted to know who has a custom 376 Steyr built on a short MRC Action. That would be me. It has been to Africa twice and has taken a large Blue Wildebeest, Eland, Zebra Warthog and others all with one shot. It has a 23"Stainless barrel with barrel band front site and a rear peep site on Talley bases.Rifle has been Serecoted and it has a Special Selection Stock from Serengeti. Scope was a 30mm Leupold 1.24x4 power. Ammo in Africa was a near full case of Varget(I think 62.5grains as I do not have the data in front of me) with 270grain Swift A-Frames at a little under 2600FPS at 20' and 80 degrees. Factory Hornady 270 grains are a little under 2700 FPS and are a little hot. Chamber was cut for Swift A-Frames by Montana Arms. This was the first 376 they did as I paid for the reamers. If some one will post the pictures I will send them some pictures. I really like this rifle but I might like a more powerful scope: maybe a 2x7.

I forgot to mention that my 376 Steyr is a left hand model and it really feeds well. I seat the bullets to about 3.1 inches.

This summer I will be offering 376 Steyr ammunition with 260 Partition, 270 Failsafe, and 270 North Forks. It is a very sensible cartridge, feeds well and has the taper that the WSMs so badly need. LD
