Joe,
If you want a double rifle for a budget bwana, start checking out the on-line auctions for the Pedersoli Kodiak. It comes in both 45/70 (which is much more common) and 9.3x74 (which is actually more useful). We've been seeing 2nd hand in NRA VG to EXC for around $16-1700. That's very reasonable! The neat thing about the 45/70 is that, after you've played around with it in the original caliber, you can have it rechambered for either 450NE or 450NE #2 and the damned thing will still regulate both barrels to the same POA. This is contrary to all DB dogma but it seems to have worked for a goodly number of the brotherhood. That's the road I'm taking.

My understanding is that a "regulating" load can be developed for double rifles by increasing or deceasing the MV of the chosen bullet. If the barrels cross-fire, the MV is too high, and must be reduced by a reduction in the powder charge. If the rifle shoots wide, the MV is too low and is permitting the barrels to move out away from the line of sight due to recoil before the bullet exits. This condition requires the MV to be increased by use of a heavier powder charge.

These rules apply ONLY to double which were reasonably well-regulated with a given load when it manufactured, of course, because there is a practical limit to how much you can cut a charge and still have adequate power; and, there's a SAFETY limit to the amount you can increase a charge. Most SXS doubles aren't fabulously strong. Of course, those being made today are generally stronger than the ones from 1890!

However, using this approach I was able to develop a load for my .54 Kodiak ML with .535" round balls that shoot R&L into 3" @ 100 yards. It took 85 grains of Swiss FFg to get this performance.
