Anybody else here have a Winchester Safari Express that they find the comb height too much for using the open sights? My 375 I can't get behind the irons on unless I move my cheek down to a weird place that not only hurts when you pull the trigger but isn't natural so isn't a snap up to the shoulder and pull the trigger proposition.

What have you that have this problem done about it? I would rather not change the stock, how about raising the sights somehow? island or such? cheaper to change the stock? :-)

Yes, I've got the same problem with too much comb height to use the iron sights. The stock is comfortable with the scope on it, though.

For my .375, I'll shoot mostly with the scope, so I'll leave it alone. For the Lott I'm going to build, I hope to find a peep that sits on top of the sight base (i.e. higher than current iron sight plane) and put a higher sight insert in the front sight.

skl-Brockman makes a neat peep sight that is adjustable for windage and elevation. It is manufactured into a set of Tally bases. If you ever want to use a scope on your Lott the peep sight has a spring that depresses the sight when the scope is on and will return to normal height and zero once the scope is removed.

D R; had the same thing.
My scope's are mounted on Leupold (Weaver style) bases,so I made or you can buy a peep sight that fits thise base.
For the front sight I installed the Lyman sight ( the one with the intserts)and soldered small ramp on the top of the tube.
If shooting with iron I look at the ramp on top
just keep the ramp as low as possible.
When using the scope the rear sight sits in a small leather pouch hanging on the sling

Yep Red, I have the same issue with my lefty M70 in 375. I'm going to be hurting if I have to shoot it with iron sights.
I put a set of Talley low rings on it but I'm going to buy another set of medium height rings because they will fit me better. I am going to have two complete scope and ring sets for my rifle and have the iron sights for emergency use only.

that's what an american negative or minimal drop stock can do...

I went through this when I had one several years ago. Replaced the factory front sight with an NEC banded front sight and the rear with one of the NEC adjustable rear sights. They are a little pricey but when you are done they look a lot nicer that the cheap factory sights, work right, and are exactly right for the factory stock comb.HTH

I will look into the peep idea. that is cheaper than changing both sights on the gun, which really are nice looking, adjustable rear even. it'll also be cheaper than having a backup scope on hand. Although how often does a scope fail and who goes to a big hunt without a backup rifle? :-) Heck, I take a second rifle with me usually when I hunt 2 hours from home.

Me too-- it's bloody painful to shoot without a scope. Fine with a scope though.

You are not alone; I was stunned to fire mine when it arrived. OUCH.
