I have two VZ-24 actions that simply cannot wait to be turned into new toys. So what does this fine group of big bore shooters recommend? Already have a .416 Taylor on a 1909 Argentine action so that is why that caliber is not listed.

Question:
In building a rifle on a VZ-24 action, without getting into calibers that would require extensive modifications to the action, what would the recommended big bore caliber be?

Choices:
.376 Steyr
.458 Win Mag
9.3x64 (indulge this one .366 caliber)
.425 Express
Other (specify below)

I'd suggest one of them needs to become a 404J

10.75x68 -- just because. Nice punch in a small package with plenty of rounds down.

MJines,

avoid the whimp label with that 9.3x64...just have the reamer cut to make a 375x 64. It's your rifle, go medium...effective, no?

I still want to see someone in the USA make Pierre van der Walt's 458 African Express. I like the name and like what the cartridge is supposed to be and supposed to do.

The .458 Sabi is also pretty interesting. Fits in a standard length action and is 68mm long. Supposedly gets 2300 to 2400 fps with a 500 grain bullet in a standard length action. Anyone have any experience with this cartridge?

9.3x64 is winning! And why not, it's a perfect cart!!!! I love mine, it feeds real slick and has power to spare!

I reckon this is the best .458 out there, it does what the Lott does, is low pressure (unless you want higher velocities) and can be put into an M-98 without cutting feedramp metal away, and can hold 4 down with magnum bottom metal I believe...sounds like a great package!

For those who don't know it, it is a .404 cut back to 2.66" (same as .300win) and necked to .458.

My other votes would go 9,3x64, 10.75x68 or .458win

And...If you run completely out of ideas Mike, I'll gladly buy one from you. I need one more VZ-24 for a planned project and I just haven't quite got it in gear and gone action hunting...
