Lets face it, despite the 'dreams' of many, nobody hunts today as those hunters of early years did on their own and without backup. Hunters today are either good shots in their own right and can place their shot to put an animal down, or will have to rely on their paid professional to support their shot irrespective of the calibre they are using.
The 40 cals, especially the .404, have probably accounted for more DG than any other calibre and will out penetrate or match most others. It is simply a matter of getting the bullet in the right place and a PH does not wait for the safari hunter to do so. If the first shot from the hunter does not put the animal down i.e. a killing shot, then the PH (and the hunter if he can get back into action) pours it in until the animal is down. I have not seen one video posted anywhere that tells a differant story.

Re-read Pondoros books. He killed most of his elephants with a 450 of one description or another, and always had a larger rifle (in the ready hands of a gunbearer) as a back up too.

Penetration isn't the really the criteria, there are many candidates which offer adequate and more penetration, including for example, Bell's 7mm, or the 7.62 Nato/308, 30-06, even the 5.56. Stopping power is what makes a good elephant rifle, especially in thick bush. But a lighter rifle can suffice, with some skill and luck or a good PH. Braining a moving elephant is not nearly as easy as one might believe, especially with a frontal brain shot. Not only is the brain itself moving as a target, but the point of impact on the head or trunk may be moving in terms of feet/sec. And there are portions of an elephant skull that no bullet can reliably penetrate and reach the brain, like the tusks for example.

If an 8.5lb 450/400 were available, it might make for a nice open country/mountainous country rifle, but nothing beats bullet weight in the tick bush, imo.

Glad to see you back John. I tried to connect with you some months ago to tell you about the buff hunt in Zim & a double. Will try again when I get back from a cat hunt in June.

Walt, Edwin,

Good to be back. Obummernomics has been hard on the comapnay I run, and I've been nose to the grindstone. But the company is on the mend... It's been three and a half years since my last hunt, so I need to go elephant hunting! Probably next year since this year's calendar is already full, but maybe a late season hunt.

what's the highest power level you can load the 450/400 3'' up to in the Ruger No.1? i think i read somewhere that the 450/400 can easily push a 400gr bullet to 2500fps. if i used my 450/400 for elephant i would want to use the most powerful load i could.

Consult a reloading manual.

If you handload for any of the guns you claim you own (Marlin 1894CL .25-20, Winchester model 1885 .50-90, Colt series 70 .45ACP, Weatherby Mark V Accumark .30-.378, Remington 700BDL .17 Rem., Remington 700BDL .375RUM), you should be able to find data in the manual(s) you own.

Do not blindly accept that a load you got from an internet forum will be safe in any gun you might own.

No, thanks. We've already had ass clowns posting photos of other peoples' rifles, claiming them as their own.

If you have guns and load for them, you should have one or more reloading manuals. Consult them for maximum loads.

Some manuals even have descriptions of the many cartridges you post questions about.

Busted.

Do you expect us to believe that you own several guns, handload, plan on buying about a dozen guns, have $2700 put aside for your .600 Overkill, but you cannot read a reloading manual, perform an internet search, or post photos? rotflmo

since you are the one with the problem big guy why don't you come to my hometown and meet me and see the guns i own for yourself? you are the only person and moderater i've had trouble with here. so just what is your problem with me? or is the problem with you? trying to compensate for something? what? if i don't purposely break any rules here how bout leaving me alone?

If someone here is willing i can take pics of my guns with a regular camera and send them to them and they can post them here. since i don't own digital cameras like i said earlier.
