...I happened into the Carter's Country off 59 south while I was in Houston today and got my first look at an unloaded 460 Weatherby case.

It was impressive.

And made my shoulder hurt looking at it!

Just thought I'd share a thought.

I've never fired a .460 Wby, but I've stood next to someone else while they touched off a round. It was at an indoor range! Talk about feeling the thump in your chest! Big Grin

460 weatherby? not a bad round to neck out to something useful

a lot like a 375 HH... pretty darn good, once it's past .416, or 458, or .475

btw, here's a pipsqeak of a necked out 460

i had one once - the thing gave me a whiplash headache after a few rounds. Believe it or not I sold it to a guy in alabama for deer hunting. He had been using a 340 wby and one of those huge deer there ran away after he hit it, so he wanted something bigger.

The older 460s had the Pendeton Dekicker which was 3 stages less than useless. With the KDF type brake things are much better in the recoil department.

jeffeosso,
are you gonna get into building those 550's for others? Just curios on cost associated with one assuming mauser action, what would you charge to put one together? How well does it feed in the vz-24 action.

look around on my website.. we had a ball with this one... it's a vz, a bauska barrel, intergal rear sight and lug, single stack feeding, etc etc etc...

if i did it again, i would go with a 25 inch barrel, for the extra 50fps...

i don't generally build em for other folks beer but i certainly can help you build one.. where in texas ya'll are ya

mine, with a severly custom buttom metal, holds 3 down, 1 up... i think a mauser could do 2 down, and fiddle the third one in

loads of fun

if you need one built, i certainly can get you someone who can.. and won't be a year doing it

Anybody know the free recoil in ft. lbs. of the 460? I wouldn't mind a list if anybody knows with ft. lbs. free recoil on

06
300 mag (of any sort, norma is best of course)
375
458 Lott
460

Just for comparitive reasons. I read an article one time, or report. It was from some time in the late 70's I think. tests and opinions from Alaska fish and game (can't remember for sure) on differenct cartridges and their suitability on the big bears. ended up that the 458win was the best, since it offered good performance in a 22" barrel and was manageable recoil. The 460 I think was 2nd ontheir list, more power but the recoil was deemed too much for good follow up shots.

Red,

I read that same article. It would be interesting to see a re do of the article with the 460s current brake.

Because it use to be like the home of 375 over here and has now become the home of 378s. I have had 378s before but not like what is here and coming.

Altough 99.999999999999999999999999% of loads will be around the 85 grains of Varget/4064 etc which gives 375 ballistics and is still about 10 grains under what can be used in a 378 with 270 grain bullets.

I have a .378 and a .416 Wby and neither one is too much...I do not know about ft-pounds of energy.. The .378 loaded with 260gr NP at about 2950fps is very easy to shoot. If you want to shoot 300gr SAF fast (3000+fps), the recoil is greater but very managable (but these are compressed loads that I would not recommend). For the .378, a happy medium is a 300gr SAF going about 2700-2800fps, or a 260gr NP at 2900fps. Fast and accurate and very deadly.

The .416 is without doubt a powerhouse..when I shoot it, there is a large explosion (I love it). But it is not that bad, but with solidly loaded 400gr bullets, you have to pay attention to what you are doing and you have to pay attention to the gun and what you are shooting. Both of these guns have brakes, I shoot only bullets I load myself, and both rifles are extremely accurate.

The .378, .416, and .460 are all based on the same case and it is as Tex21 says, quite large. I have to use reloading shell-holding blocks for 20 gauge shotgun shells to hold these pieces of brass and I had to order a cartrigde belt designed for 500 Jeffery cartridges because the Wby cartridges would not fit into anything else. I love these rifles.

I have a lot of respect for the .460, I shot George Hoffmans .460 Wby rifle a good deal. I discovered that if I loaded it down to about 2200 FPS with a 500 gr. bullet in that big huge case that pressure was down to about 40,000 PSI and recoil was less than a .458 and about on par with a .375, pretty slick was my opine on that....

I've never had the opportunity to shoot a 460, but am now savvy enough to realize that if I came accross one at a good deal, I'd pick it up. As others have said, load it down to 2300-2400 with 500's and then you've got something.
