Well it's new to me . It's called the XLT Ultra Soft and is very close to the Triple Magnum F990 but is not ventilated. It sure looks like a good choice for big bores. Here is a link

Take care,

Thanks Dave,
I have to start thinking about building another big bore and I no longer take kindly to recoil. Good to know this.

Good one Dave. I prefer the look of that to the ventilated pads.

This pad might be a really good pad for Lott's etc. I've ordered one for my new 375 Weatherby which will be a while before it's complete so if anyone has had experience with this pad it would be great to hear from them. If you have a hard kicking big bore (in the 90 ft lbs range) I would be curious if this pad has bottomed out. The F990 pad might still be the best bet for the really big bores.
Take good care,
Dave

The recoil pad on your 375 was that a factory recoil pad ? the one on my 378 was.. and it was like someone kicking the cra% out me every time i pulled the trigger even though the rifle had a custom 28 inch air gauge and it weighed 21 Lbs it still kicked it i put a Decelerator
on it .. but the one on it is the older vertion ...Much older... so i was thinking of putting one like in the post ..

Once again thanks for the heads up .

I am building a 505 Gibbs and it will have a Neidner steel buttplate, I figure no one will buy it from me, so at last I will have a rifle I can keep!!

I would prefer red or orange classic style pads, no white line base or such crap bawling bawling bawling

With the current models and offers I have to find pads from another maker Roll Eyes

Cheers

I had that XLT Triple Magnum pad installed this fall on my 375 Holland prior to my moose hunt and I can tell you that it is the best pad I've had on any rifle!!! It makes my gun a pleasure to shoot. The factory recoil pad was harder than a hockey puck!!! I'm sure that people shooting big bores will love this pad!!!

Ray,

bewilderedI thought your comfort level for recoil stopped at 416/404J. So are you going to shoot the 505, or just keep it? sofa jump

I think all recoil pads on a wooden stock should be red. It must stem from my elementary days when all erasers were red on the end of a pencil. Rubber is red.

How would you tell? Serious question -- when I fire a big rifle I get smacked of course, but I don't think I could tell if the pad compressed all the way or not.

You can tell.. if you shoot 10-15 rounds from a monster, then go back to 80-90#, you can feel it in slow motion.. I noticed this first in PISTOLS of all things.. had shot 9, 10, 40, 45acp.. then got into hopping up my ruger bisley 45 LC... then went back to jana's 10mm.. and it felt like someone was pulled the slide back and riding it down when I was shooting it...

I am a firm beliver is pach f990, but it's ugly.. I am trying the limbsaver.. seems to be a better pad than the kickese.. and i guess I'll have to use this new one

Hi jpb
If the pad doesn't bottom out it will compress and feel even as it pushes back with the recoil velocity. If it bottoms out it will compress and then feal like you didn't have a recoil pad at all as you get hit with the hard edges. Think of a shock absorber on a car or motorcycle when it bottoms out. Same idea.

I still think the F990 pad is the best for the big bores in the 80 to 90 ft lbs of recoil but this pad looks like it could be a good option for people that don't like the look of the ventilated pad.
Take care
Dave

Why not have a progressive pad?
you could start with a decelerator, reduce its thickness and with a super adhesive, graft a layer of the new XLT ultrasoft version onto it.

I just got back from the farm after shooting a box of Remington 270gr CoreLocks. My shoulder feels great with no bruise at all. With the factory winchester recoil pad it would only take 1 shot to feel the pain!!! This XLT Triple Magnum pad is great. I will try to share a picture of the pad installed on my gun... if I figure out how to post pictures!!!

That's pretty much how a Limbsaver works. It has internals that in effect, create progressive resistance to compression. The end result is spreading the recoil impulse over more time, if that makes sense.

I don't know about the XLT, but the Limbsaver products have proved their worth to me. Their "time decay technology" or some such BS seems to work! If the XLT is better that is a big step forward.
