Saeed uses it for his fast 375. I believe winchester's WSMs use that case(shortened) and I found out that Nosler's new fast creations use the 404 case.

techincally, the wsm/rum and kids aren't 404 cases -- you can't make spec cases from 404, but that's a quibble...

some of the nosler new creations (with alarmingly close dimensions to my AR cases, and the creator lives ~3 miles from where i did when i invented them) do use shortened RUM cases...

and quite a few others

I think the WSM//RUM case is the same head size as the 348 Winchester. I can’t remember their name but there were series of wildcats made on the 348 case being improved and made rimless.

I think the basic plus of the 404 and RUM case is action availabity and conversion is a much simpler road than the 378 Wby and 416 Rigby cases.

HEM is the case you are thinking of, Mike - which is a derimmed improved 348 -- which PO Ackley did 100 years ago, but not derimmed

IIRC, they were called High Energy Magnums - i first saw them about dec 1999 or jan 2000 --- made from improving and cutting an extractor into 348 cases - there's a story in there, but that's a tale for another time

I forgot that the Dakota calibers also use the 404 case.

Ive used the 404 Jefferys as much or more than most on all manor of game both plainsgame and Dangerous game...Its always been my favorite for a number of reasons but mostly because it is effective on anything up to and including elephants, it can be made in a 9.5 pound rifle or even less and not knock your hat off, shoots flat enough to keep me happy on long shots, and Ive used but never felt the need for more punch.

As to the new calibers on the 404 case, I have no use for them, as I don't need the extra this or that over the guns I have, and most are too heavy to pack all day, and have limited number of rounds in the magazine. Im just speaking for myself, Lots of younger folks packing more testosterone than I seem to love them, the bigger the better..Been there done that and paying the price today..

I'll probably catch hell for this but Ive found the increase in velocity is precious little over existing old belted magnums or whatever. A lot of claims are over the top but sell a lot of guns is my guess.. shocker

I recently picked up a barreled 1917 action in 416/404 Jeffery.

Trying to find load Data, case length etc. for it if anyone has any info it would be very much appreciated!

I know it is similar to the 416 Dakota but not sure if it is the same thing.

I got a new set of dies as part of the deal so I am ready to load when I get the data.

I had a 375 RUM and then rem decided to drop it; so I was looking for alternative cases for forming into 375 RUM. I tried 404 J. the problem was the rim wasn't rebated and the web was slightly smaller than the RUM. Other than that, they worked. a little like the reporter asking Mrs Lincoln "other than that, how was the play?
