Jeffeosso,
You said you wanted to see a video of me shooting the rifle I brought to the shoot Mid=-Michigan big bore shoot. I could not make it there, so since I was planning on bringing the 500 A Square I ran out to the range this afternoon (1:30 in the rain) and with the help of my daughter shot this "rapid fire" video. I apologize for being so slow and exhibiting mediocre accuracy at 25 yards, but it has been a couple years since I did any "rapid fire" practice (been killing elk lately not buff) so I am a bit rusty. I will definitely need to practice a bit before my daughter and I go buff hunting next season.

These are fireforming loads I had loaded before my trip overseas and were intended for the big bore shoot, but they are full patch (105gr of IMR4064 and 570gr Barnes TSX) muzzle velocity is ~2350 fps from the 23" barrel. So here is the video.

Here is the target, again I need to practice because at 25 yards this ain't too good.

Any advice?

Jeff,

I corrected a typo in my post above. I didn't make it to the Mid-Michigan shoot. I was traveling and did not get home till very late Friday (actually early Saturday morning). I shot that vid at my local range. I am not sure who made it to the Mid-Michigan shoot, but I sure wish I had been one of them.

Thank you for the kind words, but the shooting could have been both more accurate and a tad faster. It has been a very long time since I did any speed shooting, and I clearly need to do a little practice. A 4" group just don't cut it. In watching the video do you have any advice with regard to form and/or function? I know you have coached Shootaway, and it would seem it has helped him.

Woodrow,

The rifle is a rebored Ruger M77 MII RSM chambered in 500 A Square. The rifle was originally a 416 Rigby, which I bought new back in '92 or '93 cannot remember which. Al Siegrist rebored and rerifled if for me 5 or 6 years ago. Magazine capacity is 3 down, 23" barrel, and weighs ~ 11 lbs.

Here are couple of pics I have posted of it before.

It is the rifle in the middle. The top rifle is my 500AHR and the bottom rifle is my 416 Taylor. Skulls are bison on the right and cape buffalo on the left.

Now that it is documented here on AR

If the front lens cracks or breaks during recoil on any of Scotts rifles, is Scott warranty void at Leupold because he has the front ring over the top of the front lens......?

Which I'm pretty sure Leupold say you should never do.

Jeffeosso,

Thank you for the advice. I'll give it a try and see how I do. How quick are you if you don't mind my asking?

Shootaway, Jeffe says you are quicker than I am! How quick are you? It helps to have a goal you know.

Robgunbuilder, excellent point, as usual! I am impressed!!

I am not as quick as I would like to be.It also depends on how my arm and shoulder are doing. There are times when I have to let weeks go by for my shoulder to get strong enough to allow me to shoot three rds in a row.I am really looking forward to practicing with my 308 this year and also shooting the Lott once in a while.I even look forward to dry fire practice.IMO,you need to really be a big strong guy to shoot and practice with a full load Lott, regularily.

Robgunbuilder, Saeed won't let me! Shame isn't it? I think it is a very good thing that you are policing the sight to make sure everyone knows about me and my wicked ways. dancing

Shootaway, to you have a work out routine you wouldn't mind sharing with regard to properly strengthening the arm and shoulder? I tend to think you are correct in regard to needing to be strong to shoot the heavy express rifles.

I first started out picking my rifle up,looking out the window, through the scope, and aiming at a street lamp.I tried to keep the crosshairs on the lamp while dry fireing. Then I would shoot offhand, with a scope at the range and noticed that I had to keep my balance to hit the target at 200yds.There were many times when I had to shoot from uneven and soft ground. As time went on,it became easier to keep my balance.Lately,I try to do alot of my dry fireing and holding the sights on a spot on the wall,on one leg.I think jogging and working on your feet also helps.

On that 1.5-5X Leupold, the lens is set back a good half inch from the end of the scope. It's probably aft of his ring, if that makes any difference to you.

Jeffe & Shootaway,

Thanks for all the advice. Would it be possible to get a video of you guys shooting a "rapid fire" exercise so I could compare your technique with my own? I think this would/could help me immensely understand what I am doing wrong, or areas where I could improve.

Thanks!

What is it about thinking that a real LOSER Luke ScottS is somehow making a turn-around? He's just going up replay his old trick of Rope a Dope. He will pretend to be a nice guy to dupe the Newbies, that start his same old crap. In my book once a Loser always a Loser and ScottS is a total TROLL. BTW do you notice any similarities to other recent TROLLS? -Rob

Just out of curiosity, you stated you bought the Ruger RSM new in 92 or 93. The model you have, with the 23" barrel and the forward sling swivel mounted on the barrel, did not come out until, I believe, around 1997....just wondering....

congomike,

I bought that rifle new in'92 or '93 back then it was a 416 Rigby. It is a second generation RSM, heavy contour 24" barrel. The barrel was shortened to 23" after being rebored to .51. I also owned a first generation RSM, which has the front sling mount sticking through the forearm. It was my first conversion to 500 A Square from 416 Rigby. I bought that rifle used in '96 or '97.

Robgunbuilder, so what you your saying? Are you suggesting that the individual in the video isn't me, but maybe a "professional", maybe works in Africa sometimes, and maybe a friend of a friend of mine?
