I just started Capstick's book, "The Last Ivory Hunter", and he makes mention of Wally Johnson using a 9.3 Mauser. Would this have been a 57, 62 or 64? Thanks, Cobalt

When Taylor used the term 9.3 Mauser in "African Rifles and Cartridges", it always referred to the 9.3x62. The 9.3x64 is usually referred to as the 9.3 Brenneke.

Without knowing Wally, it most certainly would not have been the 57, which was referred to as the 9.3x57, but probably the 62 which was the most common medium in Africa for many many years and was referred to as the 9.3x62 mauser. The 64, which rivels a 375 H&H has been around for most of those years also, but never achieved the popularity of the 62. I may be out on a limb, but I think the 62 was the only one commonly called the mauser. Enjoy the book.

9.5x57 is a Mannlicher Sch�nauer chambering with .375 bullets. 9.3x57 was a Mauser chambering?

But 9.3x62 was the brainchild of a Berlin gunsmith. Of course it was chambered by Mauser, but IMHO it was not a "Mauser" cartridge.
