Andre, I can't answer that. I happen to subscribe to the "soft for the first shot" club for buffalo (assuming a suitable shot presentation) but many do not. I would say, if you elect to use the "solids only" approach, the 600's would serve you better. I am very satisfied with the penetration of the Barnes 600 grain Super-Solids.

No kidding

Is the Barnes solid better then the 600 grn solid from Woodleigh, Due to higher SD ?

What about chamber pressure ?

Cheers,

Again, I can't say, Andre. As the Barnes softs & solids shot into about the same group, I have not experimented with other brands of .505 bullets. I'm sure the Woodleigh is a fine bullet at recommended velocities.

I like the fact that the Barnes solid is a mono metal bullet but if the price is more recoil due to higher presure i do not know. (at same Vo)
Does anyone have any experience with this ?

Chers,

Alf,

The analysis I posted is based upon stress imparted to a Mauser action by either the 505 Gibbs or 500 Jeffrey cartridges. The loads I posted WILL impart von Mises stress levels which would be equal to ~ 108,000 psi in the weakest link of the rifle. The 108,000 psi number is the yield strength of SAE 4140 with at a hardness of 25 Rc.

I am curious as to why you feel the lugs would be shearing off. Would you mind explaining this in greater detail?

I completely agree with you that if either of these cartridges is loaded to ANYWHERE near their CIP specifications, the Mauser can easily accomondate them. I was only trying to answer Nickudu's question about how a 500 Jeffrey could have an edge over the 505 Gibbs in ballistics, ASSUMING that both were Mauser actioned rifles, of course.

Regarding your questions about my experience with a 505 Gibbs. These questions of yours have been asked and answered long ago. I see no reason to go through all that crap again. If you don't want to believe me, fine. Just tell yourself, the ASS_CLOWN has only ever owned a Remington M742, 30-06 (now replaced by a Winchester M94 30-30), an Alexander Arms AR15 in 50 Beowulf (the clown's only big bore), and a Daisy Champion 99. Oh yes, the ASS_CLOWN is also a pathological liar and suffering from "Walter Mitty Syndrome". It goes like this, "ignorance is bliss". Of course you can always just place me on ignore, that seems to work nicely.

Nickudu and Smallfry,

I was completely unaware of Mr. Lotts loads, and I would have to agree that they are MAX loads alright!. I arrived at the loads I posted by scaling up my old hunting load until the rifle would begin to yield due to the stresses imparted to it by the cartridge's internal pressure.

By the way, for the 505 Gibbs this is was 146 grains of IMR4831 and a 600 grain Woodleigh. I caution you NOT to use this load, as I feel it is WAY over a safe maximum.
