What would be the big bore caliber options if you start with a 7mm Mag?

Please mention any smith work beyond just a new barrel with your suggestions.

.375 H&H?, 416 Rem Mag?

What you have to do is greatly influenced by the make and model of your rifle.

You'd probably be better off asking this question in "gunsmithing".

The AR rds are off a Ruger 7mm Rem Mag action.

If the moderator thinks this would be better in "gunsmithing", OK - I just thought that there would be some interesting opinions from the folks here.

AllenD:
I am just thinking of a basic bolt action, older Mauser, Savage 110, M70, Rem 700, CZ, etc. I'm on the lookout for something for a project. no action yet. Haven't decided on the project's caliber yet except it will be a Big bore.

In all honestly, the best bigbore from a 7 remmag is the Ar line.. 416, 458, and 470...

goto the link in my signature to see them

the 458 winmag is the easist of the the storebought rounds

As there was a real shortage of left-hand actions with belted magnum bolt faces available in the 70's..I got one of the Rem. 700 7mm mags in left-hand action, and had it rebarreled to .458 WinMag. It's worked very well for me ever since. The smith who did the work added a second recoil lug to the Douglas barrel and bedded the whole thing (all the way out to the end of the forearm) in Bisonite.

I'm reasonably sure that on a Rem700 everything is the same.

I know Remington uses the same mag box for most magnum calibers but has a "skeletonized" one for the Ultra mag calibers.

Basically they cut a window in each side of the sheet metal mag box to relieve the magazine in the area of the case shoulder on the Big shouldered ultramags

The 458WM and the 416Rem aren't actually any wider than the 338Win/300win/7mmRem are.

I believe on many "full length" (as opposed to the actual
(fairly rare) "Magnum length") Mauser mausers you have to replace the entire magazine/floorplate assembly
in some cases.

Savage? I think that's pretty similar to the remington.
Anything else? I simply don't know.

My suggestions about posting this in gunsmithing was about getting an accurate
answer quickly, not that it "didn't belong here"
or anything like that...

Riodot--
The rifle or action you're starting with will make a big difference. A standard length (30-06 size) action will limit your options to exclude 375 H&H and any other magnum long action. My SS A-bolt in 7mm Rem Mag was pretty uncomfortable with heavy loads, thanks to a slim stock and lousy factory recoil pad. (I've added a limbsaver...) It could be rebarreled to 458 Win Mag, but I don't know if I'd want to shoot it! Smith work is pretty personal...I would include iron sights (and rust prevention due to my climate)at a minimum.
Good luck--a rifle project should be fun no matter what.

Happy shooting,

Dan

A .375 Taylor or .416 Taylor would be easy, as would a .458 WM. I would do the .375 Taylor, duplicates H&H ballistics, uses common 7Mag-.338-.458 brass, very little gunsmithing should be required other than a rebarrel.
