Carry a round in the chamber or not?
Iys been a while since I read this post and it still seems we are the stereotypical "its unloaded so we are unsafe crowd".

Why is that? No one on here knows me but you all assume I,we are unsafe just cuz we dont want to be rambo or are paranoid in bear country or whatever your reason. I could really give a rats ass. its your life.

My issue is why are we branded for being unsafe cuz we hunt with a cold chamber? I bet know one can give me a good answer.

A lesson in irony

The Food Stamp Program, administered by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, is proud to be distributing this year the greatest amount of free Meals and Food Stamps ever, to 46 million people.

Meanwhile, the National Park Service, administered by the U.S. Department of the Interior, asks us... "Please Do Not Feed the Animals." Their stated reason for the policy is because "The animals will grow dependent on handouts and will not learn to take care of themselves."

Thus ends today's lesson in irony.

Joel,

I don't think that carrying your rifle loaded or empty is inherently more safe, one or the other. It is what you do with the rifle as far as keeping your finger off the trigger, and watching where the muzzle is pointed and of course being sure of your target that are the really important safety protocols. What some are saying is that if it is always loaded once you leave the vehicle, you treated it loaded all the time. If you carry it in the field sometimes empty and sometimes loaded it is easier to get confused as to which condition it currently in and for some people that confusion could lead to an accident.

I just think it defies common sense to be "hunting" with out a round in your chamber.

No state commands such fierce pride and loyalty. Lesser mortals are pitied for their misfortune in not being born in Texas.— Queen Elizabeth II on her visit to Texas in May, 1991.

If the rifle is not loaded, you are just out sightseeing...

When you load the rifle, then you are hunting...

Interesting concept, so I guess archery hunters are not hunting unless they have a arrow sitting on there rest ready to draw back?

Hunters who carry without a round in the chamber, archers, and even revolver hunters all have the time to chamber, nock the arrow, or draw and cock after first observing if the trophy is one they want to take. If some of you can't do that and want to have a round in the chamber that is your choice.

Call me a sight seerer. I am ok with that. I enjoy taking my guns out for walks.

The two professional Hunters who I know who carry ruger No 1's carry loaded and safety on.

Many , many Pro guides have been 'taught' to carry chamber empty to appease their greenie clients and make them feel safe. From the point of view of the operator this works. The camp manager checks the rifles each morning, makes sure the chambers are empty and then there is no danger of guide shooting a client or some kid playing with the guides gun having an AD...

Only flaw in the system is that when things go wrong the guide dies trying to chamber a round since there is almost never enough time. From the operators point of view..that is fine. The clack of the guide loading his rifle turns many elephant mock charges and persuades the ele to push off and it also tells the clients that things are getting real hot...the casualties are worth it.

Being on the other side...I do not consider my self expendable...greenie clients are - so my rifle is loaded before I leave home and NOBODY touches my rifle - I tell the clients It is loaded and to leave it ALONE! and have never had a problem
