Has anyone used the 510 grain Woodliegh .458 softpoints on game? The factory box says these bullets are made for the 458 Win Mag, so I have to believe they are not really designed to be shot at a velocity over 2,200 fps.

I plan on trying to get these to shoot to the same POI as the Woodliegh 500 grain solids out of my Pre-64 M70 .458

I actually had one box that I was planning on trying out and then I saw that the dealer price on MidwayUSA was $12.50 per box of 50. I ended up buying the last 6 boxes. So, if I can get these to shoot well in my rifle, I should have enough to shoot at least 300 buffalo!

Any experience or loads you can share regarding this bullet would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Tim

I shot a buff with a 480 gr Woodleigh Soft at @ 2150 fps out of my 450 No2. It mushroomed and penetrated perfectly.

with very few exceptions, ALL woodliegh big bore bullets are design for IMPACT velocities of 1800-2200

Yes, it is an excellent bullet, but I believe its a 500 gr. bullet that Woodleigh makes and a 550 gr....

I had several boxes of old bullets that weighed 510 gr. bullets in a Woodleigh boxes and shot some buffalo with them and I still have some, but I didn't think they were Woodleighs, just some Hornadys or Factory stuff, but perhaps they were 510 gr. woodleighs, they sure worked well...I also used them in my Lott on Buffalo and they worked fine there.

I have had these bullets for quite some time, so did Woodleigh make a 510 gr. bullet at one time for the .458...

Ray,

Yes, they specifically say "510 grain 458 Win Mag" on the box. I will try to post a photo when I get a chance.

Thanks.

jeffeosso, you were right. It says on the box "rec. impact velocity 1800-2200 fps"

Ray, here is a photo. It does not say "458 Win Mag" just "458 Mag"

Thanks.

Thanks for the information, and I weighed the bullets and they are 510 gr. and they are in fact Woodleighs, I did some comparison with Hornady and sure enough they are woodleigs..I used them for years as I had quite a supply and still have enough for someone who doesn't have a .458 caliber rifle, guess I had better correct that situation..About time I gave the old 458 Win another try with handloads, or maybe better yet a Lott loaded down to about 2200 FPS....another project, just because I have a few bullets, oh well thats the way its been around here for years! jump

Thanks for the incentive to build another rifle.

I'm getting 2125 fps with the new 500gr Hornady RN InterBond (66.0gr of RL-7 and CCI250 and W-W cses). That's in a 24" Ruger M77 and also the same in my #1... That 480gr Woodleigh should easily put you right at the "2150fps" everyone seems to strive for in such rifles.

The bullet I recently loaded in my lott I thought where 500 gr woodleigh softs...................am I wrong and there actually 510 gr ??

Would make sense seeing as there .416 bullets are 410 gr rather than 400 gr.
