Model 70 Safari in .416 Rem, 1.5x5 Leupold w/ heavy crosshairs and a Macmillan stock in "Desert Camo" w/ Pachmeyer xxx pad. 8LBs.

.416 Taylor on a tang safty Ruger. Quarter rib with three folding leafs & banded front sight, Teflon coated metal surfaces,Leopold QD rings topped off with a Burris 1.75 X 6 (I'm thinking of replaceing with Leopold 2.5x8). This all rests in a beautifull piece of French walnut.

.416 Rigby, built on CZ 550 action with Pac-Nor Barrel 25" Metal work by John Ricks, Stock work by me.
Laminated stock, Stained Deep cherry, with urathane top coat rottenstoned Wgt 10 3/4 lbs. empty.

My 416 Taylor is built on a 98 Mauser and carries a E.R.Shaw 22 1/2" barrel. The laminated stock has been replaced with a B&C stock. This girl shoots well...is easy to carry.

Ruger 77RSML in .416 Rigby.

I got a 175lb. black bear in Maine last week with it. 400gr TBBC Fed factory ammo. He went 6 inches after the shot.

Just two .416s, both Rigbys. No. 1 and a 77 MkII. hard to say which I like best, but the 77 is a lot easier on the eyes with the highly figured stock. Both are MOA or better rifles so it is really hard to pick a favorite.

I have a 416 Rigby, CZ 550 factory. Warne rings and Kahles 2,2-9x42. I will get a better stock, a laminated one soon.

I have two 416 Remingtons...A Win. M-70 Custom and a Searcy Mauser custom....

I settled on the 416 Rem for convience of brass, bullets and availability....for the smaller action and more streamlined rifles of less weight than the Rigby...If I want a big action, then it will be a 505 gibbs, but thats a personal thing as the Rigby is a fine enough cartridge.

Mine is a plain vanilla Winchester Mod 70 Classic Super Express in 416 Remington.

OK,OK, you talked me into it. A Ruger 416 (listed in the classified section as I just ordered a Dakota 76 African in 416 Rigby) with Leupold 1.5X5, VariX III. "Z"

OK: WHY?
Ray suggests there is a big difference between the 375 and 416.

Only problem I have, is the ammo is twice the cost for 416, and, why not go up to a 458 Lott, or better, AIM? 458 bullets are cheaper, and more plentiful.

I do like being able to use the same brass for all three cartridges.

Not to mention I have never fired a 458 AIM or a 416, and, with factory Federal stuff, a 375 is nothing to be sneezed at.

Why are laminated stocks so popular, instead of glass stocks for the 416?

How many CZ550's broke their factory stocks?

Course if I can argue the 375 is good enough for anything, I guess the 416 can easily make a better claim, for a heftier budget.

Well, I styed out as long as I could.
I had 3 416 Hoffmans in my safe until about 3 months ago then I had to sell off for doctor bills.
I am down to one Hoffman at this point.

Now you know your just trying to stir me up when you say the 416 Rigby is "better" than the 404 since the 416 Rigby can be built on a std. lenth action...to that I say "Horsehockey"....

To start with I would not even consider a 416 Rigby on a std. lenth action, although it was done in the very beginning..I know of no-one that would consider this, other than yourself apparantly...

The 404 can and you know this, equal the 416 Rigby and it can do that very easily in a standard lenth action as the 404 is shorter than a .375 H&H...The 404 can be loaded at top velocity to come within 100 FPS or a max hot loaded 416 Rigby.
however, anyone thats in the know will load them both to a reasonable 2350 to 2450 FPS to insure bullet performance and low pressures..

On top of that the 404 can be made lighter and trimmer, has a better cross section bullet giving it better stopping power. Because of this it simply outperforms the 416 Rigby hands down...

Actually the 404 was the darling of the Africans, the game depts. and the people that hunted...The 416 Rigby never was very popular in Africa as it required a large action and was too expensive to produce...All its popularity came from the fact that Robert Ruark wrote about Harry Selbys use of it..Other than Selby and David Blunt, I know of few others that used it....So you have been taken in by another gun scribe and you, Alice, followed blindly down the yellow brick road.

O.K., you can play Elmer and I can play Jack on this issue, especially since Jack really liked the Rigby, and his pet load for it is still perfect today: 105 grains of H4831 with a 400 grain bullet.

Granted, a 416 Rigby on an M98 is pushing the envelope, and the 416 Rigby on an M70 is ridiculous. Winchester better stick to the smaller 404. If they ever chamber in the 404 Jeffery I will line up with the nostalgia crowd just to be sociable in appearances.

However we have entered an era where an unloaded 8 pound 12 ounce CZ 550 Safari Magnum is available for a song, chambered in the most perfect big game cartridge of all time: 416 Rigby. I couldn't wish for one any lighter or handier than that.

Your point about the 404 Jeffery being trimmer is moot.

Your point about the 404 Jeffery having so much greater killing ability based on a bullet that is 0.007" bigger in diameter is moot also. Though not seriously important, it also has less sectional density and poorer ballistic coefficient for a given bullet weight. This is about as important as the diameter difference, but the Rigby wins on two out of three of these vaporous points.

So the 404 was available in cheap rifles for equipping game scouts, eh? The PH doing most of the shooting sometimes used a 416 Rigby, while his scouts stood by with the 404's rusting in their palms. Samaki Salmon, the Big Fish, used his 416 Rigby in preference to the 404. He could tell it killed better, and much preferred it.

Two out of four PH's I encountered in Botswana were toting 416 Rigby rifles. One, the old hand Ronnie McFarlane, had an original John Rigby Oberndorf Mauser, it too seemed to be under nine pounds empty, and balanced and hefted like a feather. The other, a young fellow just getting started, had a CZ 550 Safari Magnum with a straight combed stock very similar to the John Rigby overall. Plenty of elephants, buffalo, and eland had fallen to these 416 Rigby rifles. Nary a 404 to be found. Ronnie McFarlane did say "Hi!" to George Hoffman, and recalled the special 416 Hoffman rifle George carried when they met in the bush. George knew the 416 was better than the 404, else why not the 404 Hoffman?

The other two PH's I met were carrying a 375 H&H and a 470 NE double. The 416 Rigby could serve as the Universal Safari Rifle based on this small sampling. Rich and poor, young and old, everybody ought to have at least one.

The 416 Rigby sure has caught on lately. Loaded ammo and components are readily available. And, the CZ 550 Safari Magnum is the best bang for the buck bar none.

No contest. The 416 Rigby wins easily, except in the minds of the maudlin.

I have a Ruger No.3 with a Pac-Nor barrel in a 40-90 wildcat. It shoots 300 grainers at 2500fps. My best 3 shot group is under 1/4" at 100 yds. using 300 grain Hawk bullets with a .035 jacket.
