jeffeosso, I came across a small ring Husqvarna that was originally chambered in a 358 Norma Mag. This might be just the ticket for you to build a nice trim 8 lb stalking gun in 470 AR.

"Originally" in .358 Norma Mag???? As a Husqvarna collector, I have to say it would be a real shame to see that gun changed. They are pretty hard to find.

It was broken down over 25 years ago I'm told. It's just an action and aluminum bottom metal now. Sorry.

Jeffe, I'm still toying with the AR idea. I think about it until I develop a flinch and then put it on the back burner again.

Yeah, I really like the 8lb idea. And maybe an aluminum buttplate to hold the weight down?

clap clap clap

As much as I like the .470AR, 8lb for a gun like that, it can no longer be classified as a DGR.

My 470 weighs 8#4oz!!!

Forrest and Forrest ...
We can swap out a numrich steel one for the alum.. but 9#12 is actually "soft" recoil... and not "As compared to the 550".. it's ~75# at 23fps.. or like a light 416 rigby

mjines picked up the 470 and ONLY had "it's too light" to say Smiler

with the tasco titan scope and steel rings, it goes to 9#12 .. or about like Hogkiller's lott.. pretty nice

I was thinking my Colt Light Rifle in 300 Win would be interesting. Would only hold one down but who the heck is dgoing to shoot it twice?

Well, no doubt you have a lot more experience than I have, regarding shooting DGR's.
I know I could not handle an 8lb rifle chambered for your .470 with full loads, at least not for quick follow-ups.

Do you normally build DGR's with chamberings with more muzzle energy than 5000 ft/lp at that weight?

Bent,
my 550 express is 11#2 (updated) or so...
my 500 jeffe is 9.75 ?!?? (i forget)
and the 470, with scope, is 9x12.. but that's the tasco titan and steel rings.. it is litterly 18oz or so lighter....

Keith's 458 lott (i did NOT build it) is 9.5 and a dream to shoot.

470 500gr at 2300 is what, 85# of recoil...
or nearly 30#-ft lighter than the 550...

follow up training and stock design

heres me (left) shooting 116# of recoil... the gent on the right, a great guy, hadn't trained for it yet

Jeffe,

I saw that you mentioned a Tasco Titan scope. I have 30mm Tasco Titan in 1.5x5 with a 28mm objective. How are those scopes? It appears damn solid and is extremely bright. Has a German #4 reticle that has bold lines. I have to say that I am a little leery of the fact that it is a Tasco, but it sure seems like a nice scope. Have never put it on a rifle.

Mike

P.S. The .470 AR that you have is too light. I would love to watch others shoot it though and would be happy to bring the Advil.

Mike,
Is that a 1.5x5 or a 1.25x4.5 ? (straight front tube or belled)

it's the unoffical bubba scope... the 1.25x4.5 ... 470, 458lott, and 404 jeffe rifles wear them..

it's sold in SA as the "puma" line, for 600 bucks us.

with the scope on, the 470 is nearly too heavy!! it's a ball to shoot

My bad. It is 1.25x4.5. It really does seem like a nice scope and I think I paid something like $150-175 for it (compared to a Leupold V-III at $450). I wanted to put it on the CZ but 30mm CZ rings (particularly detachable ones) are tough to come by since Warne is the only maker.

While it is heavy, it would have to be made of lead to make the .470 AR too heavy to shoot.

Jeffe,

Can not view your movies, but I'll take your word for it!
I to, have managed to shoot and handle heavy calibered, on the lighter side, rifles - on the range.
I have never been to Afrika.

All my knowledge about DG is second hand, from litterature and clients.
But they can not all be wrong? All to often I hear and read about shots from weird angles, in a hurry, pants down, stone sober, etc.

I don't think I would hunt Africa with a rifle I could not shoot from a prone position without ear-muffs.

Yet, I know a lot of you guys do, so I guess it works.

My DGR will be a M98 in 10,75x68, 400 grs at 2200, 22" barrel at about 9 lb. If we will enter Africa together, time will show.

Still yearn for a 12 lb .550 Express for a "show on the range"-gun anyway! beer

Bent,
it's a shame you can't see those movies. If you download quicktime you should be able to. You will not believe how "tame" the recoil APPEARS to be...

remember, what we've heard and read also says that a 375 HH kicks like hell, and there's pictures of several gun industry folks with 375hh or 416 rigby or 458 winmag, with the barrel pointed 30deg UP or more ... but the gent on the right hand movie had NEVER shot anything larger than a 45/70 or 375... and this was his first shot after surgery!!

Recall that this shot is probably just about my 50th or 70th with this gun, and I was just dorking around blasting water bottles... in other words, this is the WORST it looks

Here's (maybe) a shot of me, aim and then full height of recoil. Yes, it's a HUGE amount of recoil, but a second shot is right behind

If one pulls BACK with the left hand, and DOWN/BACK with the right hand, with their weight slightly forward, recoil becomes a training issue, imnsho!! rotflmo

Besides, it's not just the lb-ft... the FPS hurts MORE

Jeffe,
I am a beliver!
But not yet there....
Then again, I fire maybe 30 shots a year with calibers larger than .375 H&H. That is way to little to get used to and comfortable with heavy recoil. My best friend has a 9 lb .505 Gibbs wich we loaded until the bolthandle got sticky....
Hot damn, it was fun, but it was more of a DG than a DGR! Big Grin

I'll try to download what it takes to wach the movies.

Bent,
thanks! Here's the difference between a bubba bigbore nut and most others.. I'll sh0ot 20-30 rounds of 550 in a MORNING during a bubba shoot!! In 10 months, I've shot OVER 500 rounds of 550, reviewing my bullet purchase vs inventory.. I might be the first to wear out a 550 barrel!!

Heck, I've shot ~150 rounds, total, through the ARs already. I generally load about 30 rounds for load testsing/chrono/sight in when I am working up loads. If I can't make a bubba shoot, I've got a "dirt" range (means junky range) 10 mins from my house, and a good one 40mins away... and, darn the luck, I've got friends that like to shoot!!

The gibbs sounds EXCITING
