I have a friend that wants to sell me his barely shot RS Ruger for about $850. I don't really need it but it's one of those old guns that is in the back of your mind as a 400grn all-around mid-heavy in the "old configuration" (push fee--tang safety---polish blue). It's hard to put a finger on why I want it but it's just one of those itches that wants scratched??? What do you think? Buy or go find something in the "new fangled" true control round Hawkeye types but not yet in .458???

I'm with BaxterB. If you miss the chance - you will regret it ... If you buy it and don't want to keep it, sell it ... NRA Lifer; DSC Lifer; SCI member; DRSS; AR member since November 9 2003 Don't Save the best for last, the smile for later or the "Thanks" for tomorow

I contacted Ruger about a 458WM Alaskan. They told me "No, that would require a magnum length action." I don't understand, if the 338WM fits and has the same COAL as 458WM what is the problem? ____________________________________________ "If a man can't trust himself to carry a loaded rifle out of camp without risk of shooting somebody, then he has no business ever handling a rifle at all and should take up golf or tennis instead." I did he same thing Hizzie & got the same response. Even when I asked why since the action is easily capable of handling a necked up 416 Ruger or a plain old WM round, I was simply told "it's not being comsidered at this time". But I remember way back in the early 80's getting the same answer when I asked why they did't make a 308 Win version of their Mini 14 & low & behold less than a year later they dabble with their prototype "X GI" which never made production---sooooo don't always belive what you're told

I've always thought those older RS .458 Win Mags are pretty cool, but check the feeding first as I have heard from more than one person that feeding can be an issue with those rifles. I personaly owned one of the tang safety, push feed RS's in .338 Win. Mag. that wouldn't feed reliably and it ultimately found a new home. Having said that, if it does feed well that sounds like a good price. If not, you could probably find a .458 in a Whitworth or a CZ for somewhere in the same price range.

I could be wrong, be it seems like I remember someone here on AR posting that they had simply rebarreled a .375 Alaskan to .458 with no problems or issues.

I have one of the .458's with the tang safety and it feeds and functions just fine. Danged accurate as well.

As stated, buy it and load the CEB 450gr solids and 420gr non-cons and you will never look back. If you have doubts, look at the .458 B&M as built by SSK on a Winchester Mdl 70 WSM action as an alternative - at about twice the price. Hizzie, I thought the Alaskans were basically the same action as the M77 MkII. I rebarreled a 338 WM M77 MkII to 458 WM and it worked great, fed anything, etc. with absolutely no work being done outside of the barrel swap.

Thanks Steph. I've been eye balling the 416 Alaskan. Just something about SS and synthetic stocks that screams all business to me. Would really prefer to stick with 458 instead on going smaller. ____________________________________________ "If a man can't trust himself to carry a loaded rifle out of camp without risk of shooting somebody, then he has no business ever handling a rifle at all and should take up golf or tennis instead." I borrowed PH Lou Hallamore's Ruger Mk I when my rifles failed to show up at the airport. Shot my largest bull ele with it a few days later. One shot, one dead brain shot ele. It didn't realize that it had been killed with a cheep off the shelf rifle. 465H&H
