Why is the Hornady Ammo so much less expensive than the rest? Does it have good brass for reloading?

The other companies are price gouging. PRICE GOUGING! Norma, Federal, et al may they rot. Given a choice of anybody else and Hornady. I am buying Hornady or at least try them first. I even switched to their sabot slugs. You might also ask: Why are black stock guns, or any POS called tactical prices 2x+ the comparable sporting models? Why does almost anything that labeled Safari cost more? Why was the Mossberg considered the lowest grade shotgun on the rack and now they are hot mil spec $$$? Why does a double barrel rifle cost so much?

In spades, and so are some retailers. Out of curiosity, I called Gander in Lake Mary, Florida (near Orlando) a few weeks ago and asked them what they had in .458 Win. The guy told me Federal TBBC at $200.00 a pop. I laughed in his face and hung up.

Any day now, I expect Federal to go on Ebay and auction ammunition by the twenty round box. Ditto for Norma. Hornady has made a commitment to the US shooting community to expand their line as fast as market studies show they can break even on sales. Look at their track record with the British Express Rounds. 9,3mm fans? X62 and X74R bullets, brass, and ammunition available. I say God Bless Steve Hornady and the crew he has surrounded himself with, and best wishes for the future!! Rich going to SA April 8th and both DRs (470 NE & 9,3x74R) will be shooting Hornady factory stuff.

I will support Steve Hornady in any way I can. In introducing his line of safari ammunition (450 3 1/4, 450-400, 470, 500NE, etc) he obviously had a lot of room to price under the competition. But he didn't just price his line slightly less...it's about 1/2 as much or less! He's also innovative, with the Light and Heavy Mag loadings, new Superformance, and other offerings. He'll get my dollar whenever I can swing it.

I have killed two elephants with the new Hornady DGS ammo, one with a .458 Win Mag and one with a .416 Ruger. Both were side brain shots and both elephants were dead before they hit the ground. I added "insurance" shots to the heart and was pleasantly surprised to have "shoot throughs" from one side to the other of the chest. Considering price and performance, I see no need for more expensive ammo. I hope to take another elephant in September, this time with .450 N.E. Hornady ammo. I expect it to be just as good as the rest. JudgeG ... just counting time 'til I am again finding balm in Gilead chilled out somewhere in the Selous.

JudgeG, did you see any Hornady ammunition over there? I'm hoping that the reports we are getting will result in sales in Africa for them. Rich DRSS Searcy .470 NE & Chapuis 9,3x74R and 5 Big Bore CZ's.

I have had great luck with Hornady Interlock bullets. They are hard to beat. They also support the shooting sports, they are making some great match ammo. ----------------------------------------------------- Do not answer a fool according to his folly, or you yourself will be just like him. I have been shooting Hornady ammo for a very long time, and long, long before it was as popular as it is today. I just had Superior Ammunition and Safari Arms Ammunition custom load some 450-400 ammo for me and guess who's brass they both used? Hornady.

Hornady makes their own bullets, that's part of it. That said I love their VMAX and AMAX bullets but I am not big on the rest of them. They work, but other stuff works better. Their DGX is getting very mixed reviews. DGS might be good to go, I'm not sure.

Hornady is doing a great job!!! 9.3x74 , 458 Lott 458 Heavy Mag, 450/400, 405 win are a few that I use. I also hapeen to notive there 470 and 500 Nitro is half the price for double the number of rounds. abd 426 rigby is less than half price. And whats up with federal, winchester and norma charging prices for 416, 458 ammo as if its 600 NE. And esp you fedral you can stick it. I have never been impressed on much you make.

I am heading to RSA on April 8th. I will be back late on the 23rd. I am taking my Searcy and Chapuis double rifles,470 NE and 9,3x74R. Hornady factory stuff for both. I will let you know how it works for accuracy and regulation before then, and how it works on game when I get back. Rich DRSS

Hornady Brass is top of the line. From my expirence with it.

I have been buying a lot of Hornady brass in a large variety of calibers. They must be holding their supplier (Winchester?) pretty tightly with a very sharp choke collar. I am slowly starting to trust their .308 Match and .223 brass, although I still use Lapua 10:1 in those calibers. Their 300 Win Mag was giving me 0.0015" average run out last month! Their large bore brass is nothing short of sweet! This month I will take the big gulp, and buy a box of 338 Lapua Magnum. If that works well, it would constitute irrefutable proof that there is a God in Heaven. Having said all that, keep checking run out, and measure necks for variability in thickness. For accuracy loads, the flash holes do benefit from deburring. Steve is going to have 80% of the market share within five years. The ironic thing is that he can price this way because labor costs are much lower in the USA than in Europe. (Ha, ha, ha, ha!).

I agree & now add 404jeffery to the mix. Not that I buy factory ammo, but it insures a good supply of quality factory brass & bullets. With Norma you are getting hammeredx by the falling dollar. Federal/ATK is just gouging. Then again, if yo uare shooting a big bore w/ factory ammo, you arte rich or not shooting enough. LIFE IS NOT A SPECTATOR'S SPORT!
