I have a .500AHR. Basically the same thing as the .500 Jeff. I have not shot anything with it so far. It's had reliability issues. My load is 118 gr of IMR 4831 with a 570 gr woodleigh. crimped heavily.-Rob Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large numbers to do incredibly stupid things- AH (1941)- Harry Reid (aka Smeagle) 2012 Nothing Up my sleeves but never without a plan and never ever without a surprise!

I would say, there are feeding issues involved with the .500 Jeffery, which are best left to expert builders if doing one traditionally on a standard mauser98, but if you have the skill, then by all means I say go for it. If you have the money, I'd say go with Duane Wiebe for a custom job. NOT cheap. But if you want to do it yourself, then go for it, I like people that take things by the horns. But, be prepared for a long ride along the way if using a standard 98mauser. I have one sitting here, that is in the middle stages, and lacking any wood, but it has been a fun project. It's a 98 action. I'm using the spring from the outside acting as a rail. I will say one thing, it's not beyond a home builder to do this, it just takes a LOT of time. If you have patience, it will turn out great, but if you try to do it in a short period of time, it will end up being a wall-hanger. SafariKid, I was assuming you were speaking of building it yourself. Hope I did not get the wrong impression. If you are speaking of "having" it built, then go with Duane if you have the funds. But there again is a problem, because it would not be finished in time-thats a "fact". You might look at SABI rifles for a .500Jeffery-not sure what their turn-around time is though. As far as time is concerned, with the .500, I could honestly say, that even though mine is in the middle stages of completion here at the shop, that it is going to be next year before completion. So, what you have here is a "time" debacle. Unless you found a used one at auction, or from an online dealer. "Faith in God and the Mauser" DRSS-MEMBER

I've got 600gr mono-solids at about 2200fps or so. Wouldn't be my first choice for bear. Your choice for the barnes "x" 570 grainer "XLC" is a good one. I believe this has a hollow cavity about a third of the length of the bullet meaning good energy transfer. What action will this be on? My 600gr loadings are a bit long {3.550" overall}. R.

Guys, taking it alll in! I am having Mike at Bijiou Gunworks do it on a Win 70 Classic Action in all stainless on a LW laminated stock...He says no problem with the feeding,or else it wouldnt leave the shop!We will see and I will Proudly display it when done (about 6 3/3 pounds unscoped)I hope to have it in my hands in less than a month!I think the 570X Barnes will be Ideal and kill anything on Planet Earth and still be a dandy to lug around Alaska and Africa!Big 1/2" hole,Proven X bullets that are almost 600 grs and enough velocity and Ballisitc Coeffiecient to take 200 yds shots(if needed)..Rob,what would 200 yd drop be sighted dead on at 100yds?(4 "?) with 2200fps velocity??....Thanks! Hi. I had a .500 Jeffery made the hard way, from a standard Mauser, and zeroed it for the 535 grs bullet at 2300 fps. This put the Woodleigh dead on at 50 m, half an inch low at 100 m and 3 inch low at 150 m. I have used the rifle on our Finnish moose, and on plains game in South Africa. No shot was taken over 100 m. The Woodleigh SP opens up quickly at that velocity and will not penetrate through animals the size of moose or Wildebeest. But the effect is quite spectacular.. I also used Stewarts Hi-Performers with very little lead showing, but I did not have the opportunity to use it on more than an impala, which it naturally penetrated completely, slightly quartering. The 140 grs 6,5 mm Remington corelokt bullet killed a whitetail and the 535 Woodleigh SP killed a wildebeest. My load is 102,5 grs of Vihtavuori N140. Sighted about 5" high at 100 m it would be dead on at 200 m, I think. But open sights at 200 m require very good eyes. The .500 Jeffery is a close up and personal sort of thing. But it was a treat to walk around the thornbushes with a .500 Jeffery. You are going to love that rifle of yours. Here's the link to a short report The report.

Shooting full power 500 Jeff loads in a 6-3/8 lb rifle would be beyond brutal. Have fun. ______________________________ "Truth is the daughter of time." Francis Bacon

In my .500 Jeffery, I shoot 535 grain Woodleighs, both soft and solids. I use a Horneber case, Federal 215 magnum primer and 110 grains of Reloder 15. I saw no need to shoot a heavier bullet. I have not chronographed either load but I plan to do so this summer. I suspect that this load is running between 2300 and 2400 fps. I have not had any feeding problems with my rifle and frankly, I think the rumors about feeding problems with the .500 Jeffery are nothing more than a myth probably started by fans of the .505 Gibbs. My rifle weighs around 9.5 lbs unscoped. It is not difficult to shoot but the heavier bullets will generate more recoil. I have to agree with ForrestB here. I would not be anxious to shoot a .500 Jeffery that weighed under seven pounds!!! Good luck.
