Looking for recommendations for optics on a 500 A-Square. I have been thinking of putting a dot or holo style of optic on this rifle, but now I am wondering if something like a Swarovski 1-6x24 EE might work better?

I know that some will say I dont need a scope on a 500, but my personal experience is that I shoot scoped rifles a lot quicker & more intuitively than iron sights.

I put a Trijicon RMR on my .500 Nitro. Butch milled slots in the sides of the quarter rib so it fits just perfectly.

I use a Pentax Lightseeker 1x turkey scope, which is quite uncommon. I liked it so much that I went out and hunted down a spare. It's on an IER / scout mount.

Go for the Z6i 1-6x24 - you won´t regret it...

You may ask on www.Blaserbuds.com
mchughcb - another Australian fellow about his experience with that scope...

+1. The EE (extended eye-relief) version would be my choice in a heavy kicker!

The Nikon Slugger that Jeffeoso mentioned, or its sister, the Nikon OMega, both have 5" eye-relief and absolutely top ruggedness. Oh, the glass is nice, too.

I would get the 1.65x5 power model (Slugger) for use in close. The Omega has a 3x9 option that seems longer range than needed for a 500 calibre.

I use a Leupold 2.5x compact on mine, in Talley QD mounts. Works fine.

Ps:
Even a 5" eye-relief still needs proper technique.

Last year I let 4 people shoot a 500 AccRel with a scope with 5" eye-relief. One of them drew blood, somehow.

My vote went to a NightForce 1x-4x 24mm it is an incredible scope, the illuminated retical is a great low light option.

I've got a Leupold 1.5-5x on my 500 Jeffery on Talley QR mounts. If I let someone else shoot it, I take the scope off and they shoot iron sights. It hasn't bit me yet, but I did get bit by a 243 shooting prone with a short eye relief scope a long long time ago. How embarrassing!

Chuck

The A2 is on the bottom. With this setup, there's no risk of Weatherby eyebrow.

I have a Krieghoff 500 NE. It wears no scope as I don't care for scopes on double rifles. However, I also have a CZ 500 Jeffery. It sports a Leupold fixed 2.5 which I think is a very good scope.

There are other options. I have had really good luck with the lowly Weaver Variable 1x3 as well. I would rate the Weaver optics slightly better than the Leupold.

But your loading port is really obstructed.
It makes it appear that it is NOT a serious DGR.

When you hold the rifle naturally in your left hand, as you do when loading, it's held at an angle that largely eliminates the obstruction.

With the rubber cover off, it's less obstructed, but, yes, there's some obstruction. On the other hand, if 4 rounds from a .500 A2 won't do the job, and that's ignoring your ph, you might have other, less theoretical, issues.

All design decisions are trade-offs. In exchange for the minor obstruction, I gain the ability to place my first four shots with great confidence, and the ability to safely shoot my rifle from any sane field expedient shooting position.

If it really bothers you, the sight can be replaced with a shorter red dot that has a smaller bell, virtually eliminating the minor obstruction.
