Curious on what your experiences have been accuracy wise with original Winchester Pre64 Model 70’s in .375 H&H with no alterations. I have these rifles in .270 (1951) and .264 and they are both 1” @ 100yds but never owned a pre64 .375H&H mod 70.

In general, big bores are very accurate. I’ve seen very few 375 and above rifles that weren’t at least 1.5” rifles. Pre 64 Winchester’s are usually pretty average shooters, so I would expect a Pre 64 Winchester 375 to be a 1” to 1.5” rifle. Use enough gun... Shoot 'till it's dead, especially if it bites.

I never used a pre-64 Model 70 in .375 H&H in Africa, but I did take a pre-64 Model 70 in .300 H&H on all three of my African trips and used it to take a large variety of plains game, some at quite respectable ranges. I would not hesitate to take a .375 of the same make and vintage on another African trip, were I to make one. Pre-64 Model 70's and particularly those made prior to World War II are the gold standard for reliability and ease of operation, in my opinion.

Hi 4WD, I have a Winchester 70 Pre-64 made in 1954. And have two stocks, the original that came with the rifle plus another a friend gunsmith gave to me. I experienced the same problem I read many times about the fitting, or inletting, of the stocks in some M 70 pre-64: There is, in both I have, a gap between the recoil shoulder of the front bridge of the action and the stock. Both in the vertical and horizontal surfaces. So, IN BOTH stocks cracks were developed. In one a crack in front of the trigger, and in the other one crack in the same place and another in front of the magazine. In the original stock the one with these two cracks, they were present when I got the rifle. I advertised them rather quickly because some flyers did appear when shooting the new gun...After fixing them in both stocks with cross bolts and a bedding job, this Pre-64 .375 H&H, became one of my most accurate and repeatable rifle I own. Period. I can dismount and mount the barreled action from the stock and the point of impact do not shift. I left the barrel screw not too tight but not too loose. As in the famous movie, "is all I can say about this"... Good luck!

My Hoffman Arms .375 H&H has a 1938 model 70 action and shoots less than 1 MOA with my hand loads. ______________________ DRSS ______________________ Hunt Reports 2015 His & Her Leopards with Derek Littleton of Luwire Safaris - http://forums.accuratereloadin...6321043/m/2971090112 2015 Trophy Bull Elephant with CMS http://forums.accuratereloadin...6321043/m/1651069012 DIY Brooks Range Sheep Hunt 2013 - http://forums.accuratereloadin...901038191#9901038191 Zambia June/July 2012 with Andrew Baldry - Royal Kafue http://forums.accuratereloadin...6321043/m/7971064771 Zambia Sept 2010- Muchinga Safaris http://forums.accuratereloadin...6321043/m/4211096141 Namibia Sept 2010 - ARUB Safaris http://forums.accuratereloadin...6321043/m/6781076141

Mine was made about 1958 IIRC. With the factory stock which came with 2 cross bolts, it was a consistent MOA shooter. I replaced the stock (still have the original) with a custom unit fitted to me (the factory stock had too much drop at the heel for my liking) and now it is consistently sub MOA. I've had mine for many years, one of only 2 rifles I own that has a name. It dates to about '56, original in every way except stock was modified for a Griffin & Howe scope mount. Shoots MOA with my handloads. I expect a 375 to shoot as good as any big game caliber, all mine have shot an inch at least for 3 shots or they go on the road..Im an accuracy freak to some extent..The .375s seem to lean towards the accurate side, Ive never owned one that wasn't accurate. had 5 over the years. They all shot way better than I could from any field position If you own a gun and you are not a member of the NRA and other pro 2nd amendment organizations then YOU are part of the problem.
