Anyone shooting a Ruger 44 mag bolt action, the 77/44.
If so what kind of accuracy are you getting.
And any other comments on this gun?

Thanks

I played with one when they first came out. It was very accurate. My only complaint with it was the magazine limited the over all cartridge length.

I have one of the origanal carbines, semi automatic version, tube fed, I have had great accuracy, one ragged hole with the right loads.
There was a great review a few years back on gunblast,
http://www.gunblast.com/Ruger-77-44.htm, may give you the info you are looking for.

I have the 77/44. Accuracy? Minute of deer or hog. This is not a benchrest rifle. Mine is good for 1 1/2-2" groups at 75 yds with most factory 240 grain hollowpoints. Good enough to use in a treestand or thick woods which is what I bought it for. I put a low powered scope on it and took it back off; the irons work fine for my 67 y.o. eyes and the little gun is much easier to carry.

Ballistic tables show pistol slugs, with their low B.C., to be very susceptable to wind drift.

Wind drift is a non-factor at 44 mag ranges.

Gents I had a 77/44 and it was very accurate at sub sonic level, but struggled when I tried to push the speeds to try and improve the trajectory

I was basically given a brand new Ruger Stainless 350 REM MAG take off barrel and my gunsmith cut 1.5 inches of the chamber off, a slight recontour of the shank / knox and rechambered in 357/44 Bain and Davis

Feeding was floorless, nothing need changing or altering.

I was able to neck the 44 RM brass down and with LILGUN powder I can almost match factory 30/30 velocities with 140 g projectiles, it's frightening how efficient it works

I have shot 125g Hornady xtp's at foxes with very conclusive results

But my projectile of choice is the 140g Hornady FTX projectile with the Rubber tip taken off so I can seat them out further, with the 44RM case behind it it shoots a lot better and flatter than it did as a 44 REM MAG

If Ruger ever brought back the semi-auto carbine in .44 mag I would buy one in heartbeat.

I can't see it in a bolt gun. I would rather have a lever action.

I have had both a bolt action, 788 Remington and a lever action, 1894 Marlin and while I wished I had not sold the 788, I prefer the Marlin. the semi-auto would be a good choice for deer or hogs in brush IMO.

If you're looking for a hog hammer, try the .458 SOCOM in the AR-15 platform. It has .45-70 ballistics coming out of an AR-15. WOW!

A7, Looks like your group sizes at 75 yards are pretty much the same as a one hole group in +/-5mph gusts.

Sierra's 240gr JSP (0.186bc)@1700fps muzzle- drift in a 10mph perpendicular wind

25yds - 0.22"

I had one of the autos when they first came out and it was a good accurate rifle with 2 inch groups at about 100 yards with iron sights.

I sold it after the new wore off, much prefering the 30-30 for deer.

PWS, the trick is to shoot large enough animals that the 2.03" is meaningless! rotflmo

I'm with ya' A7 Wink

There's a lot of negative feedback regarding accuracy of 44Mag rifles, especially the Ruger 77/44. Shooters seem willing to accept humdrum accuracy out of a lever gun but expect a bolt action to shoot bugholes. I gotta wonder how many of those complaints about the 77/44's accuracy were the result of shooting on a windy day?

Agreed, but I went in not expecting one hole accuracy. I've owned a couple of lever action, pistol cartridge rifles/carbines and super accuracy was never the goal; just looking for a dependable, light, easy-to-use deer and hog gun. 100 yds is way, way out there from my tree stands or slogging through a cypress swamp, can't even see that far through the weeds! It's easier to find them when you hit them at 10 yds rather than 100. tu2
