Hi,

I'm seriously considering a 416 Rem Mag on a Sako 75, but I've heard some bad things about Remington brass. Is it any good? I know that I could fireform my Norma 375 brass but it would be nice with the 416 headstamp.

I also read about this guy who had feeding and extraction problems with his Rem 700. The feeding issues would be rifle related since I myself had some severe problems with a Rem 700 in 458 Win Mag before I got rid of it. I don't expect the same issues in the Sako.

But the extraction was sticky and this person thought it was related to the fact that the Rem Mag is running with pretty high pressures.

416 Rem Mag owners out there - should I get this Sako 75 416 Rem Mag?

I've used the 416 Rem. Mag. quite a bit and never had any problems with the cartridge or Remington brass.

I'm sure someone out there somewhere has had a problem, but I doubt these anecdotes have much to do with reality. There are MANY PH's that use the 416 Rem. Mag.

I have had great luck with my 416 rem mag. !/2 moa shoots flatter than my 375. You can get the power of a trafitional 416 rigby in a smaller package. You are shooting a higher pressure load, In very hot climates that can be a issue with temp sensetive powders. If you go with the rigby you caan always go bigger later on, but itis a much larger gun.

I seriously doubt that any brass is that bad!

As long as I do my practice shooting and small critter hunting with my once fired (and more often fired) brass and reserve virgin brass for serious hunts I really don't think any manufacturer of brass is worth worrying about!
Repeat: I wouldn't consider DG hunting with anything but virgin brass that had been previously cycled thru the rifle to proove it's chamberability

Have a winchester model 70 in 416 rem - I buy my remington brass in 100 piece lots from Huntingtons - with sane loading practices, you should not have any issues. I shoot light 350 grain to heavy 400 grain, no problems at all.

To answer the question, yes, buy the Sako 75 as they are very reliable and tend to be accurate.
Then handload, tinker with powder / bullet combinations and shoot the heck out of the rifle Big Grin

You won't be disappointed with your cartridge choice. Hot weather extraction problems are largely a myth IMHO. I hunted with mine extensively in the heat and I've never experienced anything even resembling a problem.......

I have a custom gun made by Rifles, Inc. I never had a problem.

I HAD a gun from the Remington custom shop that I did have problems with. The list of problems included chambering issues. Plus, I would rip my hand open on the safety if I was working the bolt rapidly.

The caliber is fantastic.

Thanks a lot for all the good response guys thumb

I've been handloading for about 5 years now and will never go back to factory ammo, especially not with these type of cartridges.

I used to own a 416 Wby Mag but that was way over the top for me. It was usable with the Accubrake, but the 416 RM/Rigby launching a 400 grains projectile at 2400 fps makes a lot more sense to me.

How the heck do you rip your hand open on a remington safety bewildered

I have probably used the 416 Rem more than any other cartridge, and with only Remington brass as I recall, and have never had a problem with the caliber, rifles or brass. My present .416 is a pre 64 M-70 with a 20 inch barrel, my first big bore carbine, just wanted something different, its handy quick and heavy enough in the barrel to point well..

I may be changing my mind on carbine big bores to the point that I like both the 20 and 26 inch barrels. It seems to be where you put the weight.

while some folks prefer the 416 rigby, i don't think anyone can be called a basher... well, perhaps the overboard 404 fans, but those aren't really comparable.

Jeffe,
I am a .404 fan but also a .416 Rem fan, love them both and they are absolutly equal in killing power, trajectory and all that rot.

I have never been a .416 Rigby fan because it only equals the above two calibers, and does this on a big old huge, bulky, action, If I have to pack that big action then I want it for a 500 or 505, something that makes you shudder when you pull the trigger! makes since to me!! Smiler but not a very popular idea, like I have said, AR folks don't always take common since into consideration, some don't even know the meaning of the word!! Smiler Smiler Just kidding guys, don't get your shorts in a wad!

It has always amazed me that the .416 Rem bashers claim pressure problems and sticky extraction with the .416 which operates at the same cup as the .375H&h and the .458 and the .458 Lott and all the Weatherbys ETC ETC..

I've only got limited experience with the .416 Rem but it's all been good.

Well, checked out the Sako 75 Custom Big Game Deluxe (phew) today, and bought it. I didn't need to think twice about this one at all, as I totally love those Sako's.

Now I'll have to wait for a few weeks before I can pick up this beauty and start breaking in clap

It will be real interesting to see what the recoil is like.

Thanks again for your help!

I shot this bull moose Oct. '06 at 200 yards with 400gr Hornday RN IL; 2 shots, although the bull was dead on his feet after the first.
The rifle is a ZKK-602 with a 1.5-6X Leopold Var-XIII scope. This rifle was a .375H&H that the original owner had re-chambered to .416Rem.

Recoil on the .416Rem is mild IMHO, if the rifle is properly weighted and balanced; my 602 weighs ~10.25 lbs, loaded and scoped...

Sako made and makes nice rifles. I almost bought Hunter AIII LtWt @ approx. 8lb in .416RM. That shop in Buffalo NY only wanted $650 for a new one (prices were in $900 range at the time). Nice gun for BIG bovine, or AFRICAN Jumbo hunter on foot, but..... definitely not a fun pinkling caliber! Big Grin
I'm perfectly happy with my 9.4lb .375 that's rifle, scope/mount, hd sling plus 4 cartridges.
