Jesus, this is like trolling for Jaws! That 14/0 Senator was not enough, neither was the boat for that matter... popcorn sofa pissers hammering Pretty much in that order.

What did I miss out on? 14/0 Senator? Boat? Is that just a movie reference?

I have been having technical difficulties with connectivity. Hopefully now resolved.

Lost my DSL again, it is flickering in and out. But I did find my pattern rifle for the 500 Mbogo (Case Capacity pending fireforming):

And thanks to SAFARIKID for this inspiration:

Glad to see you're back. Is the basic brass available from Jamison now? What's the diameter without the mini shoulder? .540 or something like that? Could just leave it alone as an experiment and headspace off the bolt face or mouth.

RIP
Brother Bear Head,
We await word from Jamison, Jeffeoso and I. I told them I want 400 cases for starters.
It can be used for .395 Tatanka too.
Maybe I need 1000.
Whatever it takes.
A group buy for 5000?

Can you not see the Max Brass diagram?
Shoulder is .572" diameter.
Neck-1 and Neck-2 are .532" diameter.

Reamer shoulder is .575", reamer neck is .535".
Hopefully it will work without any neck turning or reaming. The dummies I made with Jamison and BeLL brass seem to be a go.

Brass neck is just like Gil Van Horn's 500 Van Horn Express, but he made his with 460 Weatherby brass with belt turned off and shortened to 2.5", long ago, in a galaxy far away ...

May The Farce be with you, Sir! thumb

Assuming no taper and net thickness at the rim then .550 is the number. Isn't someone making a 550 schmegnum now? What is the parent case there? 400 Cases!?!? Surely you jest! The minimum would be on the order of 100,000 cases I would think. (thinking again) Unless of course he's making something else in volume with the same brass.

RIP
Bro' Bear Head,
Surely you jest, and gesticulate, and testiculate! Walter may be looking to sit on your lap if you are not careful.

Jamison makes the basic brass by the hundreds of thousands. All we have to do is siphon off a little of the straight cylindrical phase of it before it gets formed into .416 Rigby.

It can be left 3.000" long.

Marc can skip the headstamp operation too, or just stamp it "Jamison."

Looks like it might be time for a de-salting and clean-i=up om the old 14-0. Never used one but that's a cool device. I have a 50sw and an 80sw.
18 August 2007, 09:14
gixxer
You know I just had a random thought. Who puts a 14/0 on a tuna stick? The 80SW IMHO is about the extent you would want to go standup. Unless you are Dennis Braid that is... hijack OOPS!! back to your normal 500 MBOGO programming. My sincere apologies.
18 August 2007, 09:22
Macifej
That's probably why we don't use the 130SW or the 14-0 on the west coast. The 4-0 with 30-40 lb is the workhorse for long range. The 80sw with 130lb braided and 250 leader for the troll on the way down. (although I had that snapped off one night by something)

Ok back to the 500 Mbogo! Where is the RIP-a-tista anyway?

Didn't know that Jamison is now doing production quantities. Last time I spoke with him they were tinkering with this & that.

Jamison is doing big military contracts currently, and some sidelines of .416 Rigby, here and there.

I have visited his plant several times. If one has as much machinery and floorspace as Jamiaon, then one must soon produce quantity.

I finally went through my piled-up snail-mail and found an invoice from Stuart Satterlee dated 08/06/2007 that looks to be an acceptance of adding barrel work and sights for the 500 Mbogo.

Let's see how long this takes. thumb

boom stick,
You might want to actually try some hunting and shooting yourself, for the first time ever? And try a sense of humor too:

Fred Zeglin says you gotta give the pioneer his due when naming a simple neck-up. This is where the Fifty-Aught-Eight, er, uh, 500 Mbogo name comes from, page 242 of WILDCAT CARTRIDGES by Fred Zeglin:

All of these ancient photos of you are scaring the pets. If you persist I'll be forced to locate and post gratuitous photos of myself on various outdoor jaunts.

Macifej,
Please do. We will see if we can somehow make your pics pertinent to the 500 Mbogo also.

BTW, my fishing guide was from California. He was collecting disability pay for a bad back, work-comp, courtesy of tax payers. Living in CA in the winter, and rowing his drift boat against the current of the Kasilof River all summer in Alaska. Nice racket. Good therapy.

He got me into some fish.

I tried the Kenai River in a power boat piloted by a guide who was a used car salesman most of the time, in Anchorage. I got no kings with him. Sucker racket there.

No Salmon around here Dr. Beriberi. Razzer Salmon are for Bears not people. Yellowtail, Dorado, All the major varieties of Palaegic Charley and the occassional Broadbill or Marlin. I've caught and grilled them all. Wahoo tend to be the best but you have to get waaaaay down (south) usually. Terminal cases of Meniers combined with bad TMJ, and congenital sinus issues have kept me interminably landlubbed in vestibular hell. Hence my rekindled interest in building rifles to slay any Bronto-Rexii whom dare to wander into the hood. (Have to prepared for all eventualities you know!) Big Grin

I like pictures.
Maybe some pictures of a Satterlee action with a 500 Mbogo barrel will show up here someday. I am hoping for a Fifty in Aught-Eight.
If Stuart can make a 500 Jeffery feed, then a 500 Mbogo should be a piece of cake.

Yes! Pre-digital was tedious indeed. Have to scan & upload. What's the hold-up with the Saterleenight Special? Seems like a simple enough task to me. What would the market price be for said beast?

Basic action, Magnum Mauser, welded on bolt, square bridges with your choice of machined-integral scope bases, chrome-moly or stainless, safety on right hand or left hand side, your choices all, is $3000. One piece integral bolt handle and bolt body adds $1000, and up from there. I've got one on layaway. Wink

What's the hot ticket on the machined in bases? Any particular base that's Uber-desireable?

I am asking for a Weaver Picatinny to use Badger 34 mm rings, or Leupold QRW, or Mark4, or Warne Maxima, or the cheapest Weaver antique.

Am I daring or what?

Guys, I am a bit confused. I am planning on building a .510 rifle. If I base it on a 460wby case, it headspaces on the belt 950 wells or asquare). If I base it on a 416 rigby case, sans belt, is therfe enough shoulder for headspacing? I am getting mixed messages on AR. Thanks for clarifying the matter for mere mortals!
20 August 2007, 10:19
boom stick
the 500 mbogo/510 K.E./500 a.r. have about or over 20 thou shouldr per side and that is enough for even a bad gunsmith to get to headspace correctly. consider the shoulder of the 10.75x68 and this is huge

500 Mbogo: 40-thou difference of neck and shoulder diameters here. That is 20-thou step "per side" in the 2-D view.

500 AR has 21.5-thou per side.

510 Wells has only 12-thou per side.

20-thou per side is plenty.

The 10.75x68mm Mauser only has about 13.5-thou per side and is the smallest factory loaded shoulder.

You gotta ask yourself, do I want to put up with the wildcat kitty litter. That is all.
