Bent FossdalJeff Cooper, RIP.
I find it strange that this has not been mentioned here at the AR.
Jeff Cooper passed away last night. He made it to the honour board in my world, and will be missed.
RIP, Colonel.

He will be missed and his comments

Many liberals can now walk safely now

My favorite comment from him will always be
" 375 H&H...too much for 75% of game in africa...and not enough for the last 25%"!

Idaho SharpshooterSemper Fi! He is beyond the infirmities of old age and the sad irresponsible (the masses) world we live in. Laying up on the Serengeti Plains with Robert Ruark and Selous and Rhodes having a single malt scotch and planning the next foray against the Big Five. God Speed Jeff, we are diminished.

congomikeI will miss his column in Guns and Ammo..the only thing that made that magazine worthwhile.
As for favorite sayings, the one that stands out in my mind is, and I am paraphrasing this,
"An ingenious solution to a nonexistent problem" when talking about double action semi auto pistols.
May he rest in peace.

jeffeossoGoobye Jeff..
I have enjoyed knowing you through your writings. agreed with most, disagreed with some, and doubt you would have taken too much offense in either direction.
May you passing have been easy, and your Way light.

I'll miss that, too.
I always read that magazine starting at the back page with Col. Cooper.

analog_peninsulaYou have to love a man who openly says what he thinks and lets the chips fall where they may.

Rick RI'm another person who started reading G&A from the back and then read his musings off the Internet when I found those.
Always thought provoking and usually right but never PR.
I hope he's sitting with the Greats extolling the virtues of the Scout rifle and Baby.

lawndartFWLIW, my earlier post:
quote:
He was one of the last men to qualify with a saber on horse back.
In WWII he relates that one day their peer competitors on the battlefield (japs) were trying to escape by swiming across a small bay. A "well seasoned" sergeant ordered all his men to assume the sitting position and starting shooting as they had been trained. After that it was basically one bullet per pumpkin.
He instigated us all to shoot an old weapon to its full potential. Now anyone with a modicum of hand/eye coordination and the discipline to practice diligently and well can be truly lethal with a hand gun. Who'd a thunk that thiry years ago.
He verbalized (and wrote down) the half formed thoughts that we have all had about the hard and unchanging responsibilities of all true men. The dialogue between the warrior class and the hoplophobes has never been better because of that.
I wasn't skilled at all the items on his (in)famous list of "things a young man should be able to do by the age of twenty one" until my mid thirties. I recommend it as a goal for all young men to pursue.
I believe Colonel Cooper's only major dissapointment will be when he meets Jesus Christ and notices the Sig P-220 on the Son of God's right hip. He will be heartened by the reworked Colt Commander (series 70, of course) that the blessed mother Mary carries in a hand tooled holster with an FBI slant.
Open the gates Peter; a true warrior returns home.
