ranb40Need 458 socom advice.
I got my 458 socom upper today. I was wondering what is the heaviest bullet I can shoot subsonic and keep it stable. It has a 1-15 twist I think.
Has anyone here ever shot cast bullets in an AR15? I heard they can clog up the gas tube. I would lke to use cast as they would be much cheaper to load. Thanks.

also try using gas checked cast bullets...
i would suggest using an inexpensive copper jacketed bullet that is all purpose i like 350 gr nosler pp bullets.
let me know what you think...

MartytWWasn't paying attention to this board, my apologies. If your upper came from Castle, the barrel is a 1 in 14 twist, meant to stabilize the Barnes 600 gr O at subsonic velocities. That is the heaviest bullet we found commercially to date ...
As long as your cast bullets are hard cast and you're not shooting high volumes, the gas system won't care too much ...
Email me if you need more info

Big BoreLots of info linked from Marty's web site and also a lot of info on AR15.com. I have shot up to 500 gr. bullets out of my .458 SOCOM with perfect stability at 1335.2 fps.

ranb40I am still waiting for brass from Graf's, but I have a few more questions. When I got the upper, I saw that it had no brass deflector. I shoot left handed when using peep sights. My Colt upper has a deflector that has marks from the brass it deflects out of the way. Is the brass from this upper going to hit me in the face? If it will, are there brass deflectors I can install? I am working on a brass catcher to use in the future. Thanks.
