I FINALLY FOUND No. 14 BREVEX - WHAT A FIND - AN ORIGINAL POST WAR JOHN RIGBY BREVEX - CASED WITH ALL ACCESSORIES.

I haven't posted in a while because I have not found any new treasures worth mentioning ... until now ....

I had been wanting to add another Brevex to my collection since over a year ago. No. 13 was added in September of 2022 and I was starting to think I was stuck on unlucky 13 forever. But not so .. and what a treasure this one turns out to be. Near as I can tell its never been hunted and appears unfired. It was purchased by Gastinne Renette for one of their customers back in 1971. Gastinne Renette of Paris is a maker and specialist in the weapons of hunting and luxury. Their quality is on par with Holland & Holland, Purdey and Boss & Co.

Why this gun remained a safe queen for over 52 years in unknown. History shows it was sold by Holt's Auction House in England back in 2015, and remained stuck in red-tape export laws for over 8 years, until it was finally imported to the the U.S. this year.

Its a treasure to have a an Original John Rigby in 416 Rigby cal., and even more so because its a rare Brevex action. Emails with Diggory Hadoke, the Rigby Archivist, was told by Paul Roberts, who was in charge of Rigby at the time this rifle was made, that only four .416 rifles were made on French Brevex actions. (sourced from Giles Whittome) He went on to say that between 220 and 230 were made on CZ actions and 40-50 were made on Magnum Mauser actions, many recycled from .350 cal.

Needless to say, this is now the top treasure in my Brevex collection. However, there is one negative - although the scoped rifle weighs only 11-1/2 pounds, the rifle in the case weighs over 41 pounds. I guess the 30 pound airline travel case is made to protect the rifle in case of a plane crash.

... as always your comment are most welcome ...

Are you using a computer or a smart phone? My pictures are uploaded and linked from my web page - like they have always been for years.

Hello eagle27. The pictures are from the same location as from this link to number 13 Brevex, and you saw those pics just fine as per your reply.

gorgeous rifle - it needs some love, as the metal finish is great, but the pores have opened on the wood, especially clear in the cheek piece and wrist photos - I fight this myself, and may be over sensitive -

Fun fact, I have 2 gun safes, a larger one and and smaller one - when I finish a gun for myself, the wife has the keys to the smaller safe, where the gun sits for a couple months, as she got tired of my whining about all the flaws in one of my stocks - she's figured out that if it sits 2-3 months, i'll enjoy the new rifle -- my youngest calls me a perfectionist

The images were fine over on NE where buckstix also posted. Tried your suggestion, images open in new tab but all small and in a list type form. Something not quite right. Images on other posts here all fine.

Cool rifle. Great catch!

On the plains of hesitation lie the bleached bones of ten thousand, who on the dawn of victory lay down their weary heads resting, and there resting, died.

It took me a min to get the pics to open, but I did, great rifle Buckstix!
Jeffe, I had a good chuckle about your post, and know what you mean.
I'm the opposite. I finish a stock, and love it to death. Then as time passes, I start seeing things I want to change on it.

Hello jeffeosso,
Thanks for the reply.

What would suggest, a hand rubbing with some boiled linseed oil?

Thanks to a seller on Gun Broker I was able to purchase a Vintage unopened box of John Rigby 416 Rigby ammo, from the same period of the rifle. It fits perfect in the case and adds to the originality of the display.
