Faster reloading, if you care (I do), and it's light, easy to carry, and quite accurate. 300gr at 2100+fps is stout with that light of a gun; 2000 with 405 Remingtons isn't much better. But for a big slow bullet shooter, it's a lot of fun. I like to download mine for plinking; 1100 - 1400 w/cast Oregon trail bullets you can shoot all day.

My buddy and I bought a pair of them about two years ago, and we have a blast with them. I put a limb saver on mine mainly to increase the length of pull.

I reload 45-70 for this rifle and find it very fun to shoot. Plus, it is my "loaner" rifle for my buddies who do not have rifles yet. I had an extra 3x9 scope that I placed on it and have it zeroed dead on at 100 yards. Right now we're just using it for hog hunts, though I might take it with me this fall when I go for black bear. I'm loaning it out for its first hunt in two weeks

Comparing it to your .50, it can be loaded up or down very easily and there are plenty of bullets available for it (keeping reloading costs down).

good luck

You see a fair number of these at Cowboy Action Matches. Sometimes a shoot will call for a few long range single shot rifle rounds. Some folks will use the handi-rifle as a cheap alternative to a Sharps or other more traditional single shot rifle. Nobody seems to mind shooting 10-15 rounds of "cowboy" loads thru these with either smokeless or Black Powder. They're quick to load and eject the brass a long ways and plenty accurate out to 100 yds.

I have three of them. The Buffalo classic with a 32 inch barrel and two of the 22 Inch Handi Rifles. For plinking I shoot 13 grains of Unique with a Winchester Magnum primer. No fillers needed and it chugs along at about 1150 fps. I shoot both Black powder and smokless. Very fun guns.

Great guns. I have a fixed 6x scope on mine and it works great. Don't worry, it doesn't kick that much.

I really am impressed with the handi-rifle. You may consider the encore also. Muzzle loaders are fun and all but very labor intensive.

I kinda like Handirifles too, have several big bores H&Rs to include two 45-70 Handirifles, one each 45-70 and 45-120 Buffalo Classic, a new 444 Marlin Ultra and 45 Colt Carbine, 500 S&W Ultra and a custom 405 Winchester Target. Their all excellent shooters with just about any load run thru em, specially the 45-70s, it's a gotta have caliber in an H&R and probably one of the most popular.
