I've been wanting a double for quite a while now. I've been looking at Champlin and he has a great looking Cogswell and Harrison 475 3 1/4 in. What do ya'll think about it. I like differt stuff, and would really like a WR 476, but don't have that kind of cash to let go of right now. Just wanted to know from the few of the nitro buffs around. http://www.champlinarms.com 505ED DRSS Member

No doubt it is a beautiful gun. Unless you're collecting and not shooting it much, I'd go for another. I believe the 475 is .483 or so bore diameter and you'd have to get .483 bullets and different brass for it. The fact that you're going to have to get non-standard components for it, I'd rather just get a brand new 470NE from Searcy. At least with a 470NE, you can easily get brass much cheaper and there's a lot of bullet choices out there for it. The same gun in 470 ne would be 14k.. so think about how much dies, brass, and single source bullets mean to you. of course, you could shoot casts as well. 120 pieces of brass will last you a life time jeffe opinions vary band of bubbas and STC hunting Club Information on Ammoguide about the416AR, 458AR, 470AR, 500AR What is an AR round? I just now looked at the listing, the price is right. It had been a while since I've perused the Champlins site; they definitely have some purty ones there. Lo do they call to me, They bid me take my place among them in the Halls of Valhalla, Where the brave may live forever.

.475 x3.25" will do anything any of the other 45-48 calibers will do. I've use one, no problems, always did the job. JudgeG has one as well. You can use .450x3.25 brass as well and neck it up. I got good life out of Bertram's stuff. Price is fair. If you go for it, I have a set of dies, brass and bullets left over from my last one that we can get together on if you're interested. I like English doubles and it's a pretty rifle.

Don't blame you for wanting a .476 WR. Only had two chances in 35 years and neither time was the cash there! That heavier bullet should be a dandy.

If I bite, I'll get with you on the dies. Was the 476 relesed to the gun trade like the 470 or was it only reserved for WR? I shure wished Butch would do a 476. That 520 grn bullet would almost split the difference between a 470 and a 500 NE. Oh I'm a dreamer. DRSS Member

As with any rifle, re-sale should be a consideration. No, you may never sell it, but possibly some day your heirs might have to. .470 has been and will continue to be the most sought after DR caliber for general overall use. Thus my choice for DRs. Get sick of the rifle, get sick, die....a .470 will be a relatively easy sell in what most will agree is a tiny market to start with. IMHO, Jeff

How does the .475 3.25" compair to the .475 # 2 NE? By the way I got brass, bullets and loading dies for the .450#2 I am building from Huntingtons you might check them out. It is not what you hunt with, it is how you hunt that matters!

505ED, I would look at 450/400 Chat Lancaster (very famous maker going back to percussion days) being offered by Steve Barnett. I have not examined it, but it looks like a prime piece of Lancaster rifled barrels. Get good caliber and the NAME to go along with it!!!

True on the resale, but I have no children, and the heck with anyone selling my stuff!! No just kidding, Paolo I check out the 450/400. I love that round light recoil and good preformance, a real pleasure to shoot. 505ED DRSS Member

The 475 NE is made on the 450NE 3 1/4" brass, the 476 WR, and the 475#2 NE are made on the 500NE case, but are easier to make from a 470NE case. The resulting case will be a little short for the 475#2 NE which is 3.5" long. The 475NE 3 1/4" is easy to make from 450NE 3 1/4" case! I don't remember if you need the thick, or thin rimmed case to start with! All are good chamberings, and the rifle in question is a very nice rifle! I looked at this rifle myself, but happened on a NEW/used 470NE double,in it's factory luggage case, along with 5 boxes of Factory ammo from Federal, a Cape Buffalo soft case, and custom Murray sling, that was priced so I couldn't turn it down. Otherwise that rifle might be in my vault today! ....Mac >>>===(x)===> MacD37, ...and DUGABOY1 DRSS Charter member "If I die today, I've had a life well spent, for I've been to see the Elephant, and smelled the smoke of Africa!"~ME 1982 Hands of Old Elmer Keith
