Some good news for a great caliber: Quality Cartridge has completed a new run of 500 Accurate Reloading brass cases. Bags of 20 are around $72. Besides contacting QualCart directly by telephone, the cases are expected to be carried by MidwayUSA shortly. What's so special about the 500AccRel? Well, imagine the firepower of the massive 500Jeffrey or 505 Gibbs packed into a standard 30-06-length receiver. Yes. Truly a rifle for dangerous game, not relying on outside backup. Sure, lesser calibers can reliably kill a buffalo, but the buffalo will run farther and die slower than with a 50 caliber in the same spot. (Six years ago with a 416 I had a buffalo run 300 yards on a fatal lung shot just behind the back corner of the heart, found dead under a tree after something of a track, search, and adrenalin flow.) The 500AccRel can produce 7000ft#+ of muzzle energy safely in 22" barrels. 6000 to 6500ft# is a piece of cake and equals factory Gibbs and Jeffreys loadings. Of course, the bolt-face must be opened up to Rigby size, so starting with a Hawkeye magnum caliber (7mm, 300, 338, 375Rug) is a head start. Myself, I have a 500AccRel built on a Ruger Hawkeye for a handy stopper rifle. The barrel is 22" and has an integral barrel lug in addition to the receiver lug. The reamer with .255" freebore is recommended, 500AR "Nyati". (Not the 1.25" freebore, if brass bullets might be used). The biggest challenge for me was finding a wood or laminate stock that would hold up to the recoil. Extra cross bolts and careful bedding before any testing seem to have solved the problem. Of course, for quite a bit more pocket change Accurate Innovations will build something beautiful with an aluminum chassis. Alternatively, my original Hogue stock has also held up well, including the addition of bedding in the barrel channel, internal all-thread cross bolt, and with all thread going back to the forearm-receiver spacer. Anyway, with wildcats it is always nice to know that head-stamped brass is available. And the 500AccRel certainly fills a niche. +-+-+-+-+-+-+ "A well-rounded hunting battery might include: 500 AccRel Nyati, 416 Rigby or 416 Ruger, 375Ruger or 338WM, 308 or 270, 243, 223" -- Conserving creation, hunting the harvest. | ||
