Hi folks. Have a chance to buy a .510 Van Horn. This is the load it was designed for, and, it feeds flawlessly. It kicks, pretty much as much as I want, and, with open sites, I LOVE this caliber, gun weight, and gun.

Anyone that hit their mark have a problem stopping ANYTHING with this load?

I'm getting vicious, and old, and, want to go major feral pig hunting with it. Any failure to stops, on Texas heart shots on pigs?

Friend has a .505 gibbs, with similar loads, and claims a 100 percent, one shot, in your tracks stop on Texas feral pigs...

I have not shot a Van Horn but do have a 500 A-square. Unless your pigs are somewhat larger than elephants, you'll have no problem.

I think you may be a glutton for punishment. Big Grin

The van horn is just slightly smaller than the 500 AR in capacity ..600gr with a barnes is doable, and not tough.. there's probably more there.

is it enough? for anything short of an APC, yes

the FN is probably better for animals

Jeffeosso:

A bit concerned about reliable feeding. The current owner suggests that with the barrel length, going down in bullet weight might not get the velocity to make up for the loss of bullet weight. Any suggestions for .510 expanding bullets, that feed reliably?

Also, Barnes doesn't exactly give those solids away. I wouldn't mind a cheaper bullet that I can shoot a bit at the range.

Jeffeosso:
Just looked at your link for the .500 AR. Looks like I could move my cast 525 grain .510 LFN's at near 2500 fps? shocker

And, your getting over 2300 fps with a Woodleigh 600 grain bullet. WOW! My shoulder hurts thinking about that...
Where is the recoil pad???

What barrel length was your test gun?

Wonder if the shorter barrel on this gun will affect velocity much?

Also, what Hawk bullets would you use for deer, pigs, etc.?

And, what is an APC????

Do you have a suggestion for a better recoil pad then the one on the rifle?
It's the bottom gun.

I've already got gas checked 525 grain .510" cast hard lead bullets. Come to think of it, at 2500 fps, they may well expand, or turn into fragmenting bullets on deer or hogs... You have an excellent point.
Plus, they are MUCH cheaper...

Now I just have to make sure the gun feeds them...
