+1 If that was a 20-25 yard target, one may wonder, but at 100 meters (110 yds), you're golden. Your shot will probably be much closer anyway... | |||

I had a Woodleigh blow up on the rib cage entrance hole. It was recovered at the far side of the chest shaped like a Half Dollar coin. The company has since "toughened" the design up, but they have never worked well on the mature bison that I often shot close up on follow up to a sport's shanked shot. They worked beautifully on longer shots of sixty to eighty meters or so. A-Frames, and North Forks solved all the problems.  | |||

It was a Federal Factory Load in 416 Rigby. I switched to 400-grain Swifts for handloading, so cannot comment on how much tougher the "new" Woodleighs are. I would like to get a new Woodleigh, section it, and compare it to a sectioned old Woodleigh. Good old carbide cut off wheel. | |||

If I had to pick one bullet to hunt DG with the rest of my life with the exception of elephant I woul opt for the wonderful North Fork flat nose CUP POINT, it penetrates like a solid and expands like a soft, the best of both worlds, I have shot more than a few buffalo with it and most all the plainsgame. I used it in the 9.3,x62,450-400-3", 470 NE, the 404 and 416 Rem., .375 H&H on buff and PG,,It's the best bullet Ive used, If you have not tried it, then give it a chance, you won't be disappointed..Ive even retrieved a number of these cup points from end on shots a buffalo, and Hippo..I cleaned them up and photographed them..like I do with most retrieved bullets since Mike Brady admonished me for sending him yuckie bullets! I talk to a number of different PH's in the course of my work. What I find is that more and more they are telling me there is no need for solids and that has been my limited experience also. I have had two very experienced PH's tell me that they did not want me to put any solids in the magazine while hunting buffalo. I will only carry solids for the little guys now or in the unlikely scenario that I hunt another elephant. To the original topic I have not used the Woodleighs but the SAF have worked be very well for me on buffalo, hippo, and all manner of other game in Africa and Alaska. Mark MARK H. As dog leg prescribed, He uses a soft then another to break the hip as the bull takes off for parts unknown..and no doubt at all that will work...but on a buff going south one could easily miss that hip joint! and the soft would end up in ruman or who knows where..I have seen the hip joint missed more than a few times, missed it myself a couple of times, snap shooting in the bush can be tricky, a twig can put a bullet of any kind off course. I have no doubt in my mind that your an excellent shot with a world of confidence but to me,Its just not that cut and dried, poop happens to all of us in time! Ray, as far as shooting the cup points in the 375 H&H, did you shoot the 300 or 350 grain? Curiosity has me wondering why the cup point on plains game? I'm assuming it acted like a solid on plains game not a soft point. Hook em Horns | |||

The cup point always peels back to at least the inter cup, on everything, It never expands to a great degree, just enough to really be effective on any animal. At least that's been my experience..Its a great bullet. I shot it on everything in the375, 9.3x62 and 404 and .416..it just flat out works..does sit knock them down and out at the hiT?? sometimes yes and sometimes no..just like every bullet I have ever used..The cup point only comes in 300 gr. for the 375, 400 for the 40 calibers and 500 for the 458 as far as I know..the Woodlieghs come in 350, 450 and 550 softs and solid best I recall. +1 on the NF CPS - a great bullet. If I can find it, I will post a picture of .411 300 grain at 2250 fps that shot through the shoulders, ribs and heart of an Asian water buff and was recovered under the offside skin. All impacted bones were reduced to bone meal. The beast was dead before it hit the ground. A 40 yard shot with .405 WCF. I have a large number of recovered cup points and N.F. softs also..I field tested them for Mike when he owned Norh Fork...As good as bullets can get on buffalo and PG..I may have used one and an elephant, not sure. Yes, The NF Cup Point is awesome. I agree with Ray, " It's as good as a bullet can get on buffalo..." I have never tried it on PG. Good idea. BTW, almost every Safari brochure suggests that you bring along a few solids on your safari for buffalo hunts or of course for 21 day hunts? Check it out at SCI..Contrary to some, most of the PHs Ive known and that is many, suggest having some solids under a soft, or next door in your double..but most of the PHs I know are the old guys, not the new crop of So.
