SAFARIKIDMy 4 Bore Dbl is Here!Wow,what a "Push"!600OK shot too!
Well, after a year,I got them both and got to shoot them today.!18 rounds later,I got a Headache, but it was worth it!First, the Lil 600OK...50 yds offhand with brake on,not terrible, but you know it went off.Sights right on and after 4 rounds of breakin ME in,I got brave and took the break off..OUCH!What a difference!4 rounds later and it went back on(for now)Next 4 rounds,Killed me a big tree, went through a 18" like nothing with SP's...Then a 5/8 hanging steel plate at 25 yds,and wow, right Through it,with Soft Points! Sheer Power Boys!!..took a break after that 12 rounds and Then,Time for King Kong to come out and play!26 pounds of Iron!22" barrels and still a hard time for my 6',235 pd frame to hold it up steady!KaBOOM!I survived! Not so bad, just raised my left leg off the ground, kinda fun! After the 4th round on paper, saw another Tree(a dangerous one)so I stalked it and took it out like Paul Bunyan!Blew a hole out the other side! Then the Steel plate challenge...1 Inch Diameter-2000 gr Jacket Soft Point(.65thick) "GONGED" the hanging plate like a Sledge Hammer! It was hanging on a cable and jumped around like a earthquake! No,it did not go through it,BUT,the damage was Severe. It pushed out a depression 4 inchs in diamater and stretched that steel a good 1 1/2 back!BRUTE Force!I cant imagine a solid shoulder shot on a Buff,Hippo or Mastadon! Pics coming soon...Time for a Aleve!

You know those big guns are like crack cocaine, the more you use them the smaller your nuts become!

Just kidding SafariKid, I'd like to see some pictures as well, especially the ones where you are in full recoil!

SAFARIKIDOk,pics arrived, thanks to Boom Stick,Thanks Pal...Let me explain...That is the 600Ok by AHR dwarfed by its BIG Bother,A 26 pound Ken Owens Custom built 4 Bore, one inch holes there folks! It is to be checkered this week by a local friend and the Engraved by him also, hence it still being in the white.Shot some 2000gr Solids today(5) and got my workout, just trying to hold it steady!SMACKED a steel 24" x5/8" Plate so hard, that it broke the attaching cable and knocked it into the dirt backstop!I pulled the trigger,Kaboom and then recovered and looked to see and damnnn, the plate was gone!I said, what the heck and when I got close saw what happpend...Jeese,what would it do to a Cape Buff,Hippo or Elephant with a good solid shoulder hit!...The other pics are a 308 next to a 600 and a 4 bore...Enjoy!

Thats great, I would love one of those well done !!

bigdoggy700Tom,
Are you using the same guy that finished the 700 stock for me? He does very nice work!
27 August 2006, 05:22
50 CalshtrTom,
Good to see you back in town, that tree was a real menace and no one else had enough rifle to handle it. Have to admit it, this is one time when I'd have to say better your shoulder than mine. They do look great however, nice lines on heavies are hard to find. Still playing with my lightweights, a new (for me) 375 Whitworth, and nitro for black loads for the 577 BPE and 577/500. Catch you around the block, literally.

thornellDang, you must really enjoy pain.

Nice rifles though.
27 August 2006, 10:19
SAFARIKIDThanks Guys!...Pain,not really, but after shooting the 4ore today,it wasnt as bad as yesterday, just a b.t.h holding it steady to hit the target.Need more pratice and will have to use shooting sticks in Africa.Shouldnt be a problem from a Georgia treestand waiting for Hogzilla!Just need a big branch and a parachute in case it knocks me out the stand! : )..Being checkered now and engraving is next,Wooly Mammoth with Huge Tusk for starters...Well,see you in a week, headed for Maine in a few hours for Black Bear and Coyotes with the 500 Smith and a .17HMR Volquartson Cheetah Pistol!

Yes,he has it now and will complete the hand rub oil finish and possibly d engrave it too!
"That's not a knife..THIS is a KNIFE" !
The 4 bore looks like it has about an inch shorter LOP than the 600 OK. Is that so you can add a slip-on pad in addition to the installed pad, or just a trick of the photography angles? Front trigger on double is same LOP as single trigger on bolt action ... yep I think I see that now.
If you can get FN solids for these two they will be beyond awsome.
Good luck with the bear and watch out for Hogzilla, Bigfoot, etc.
27 August 2006, 12:17
GrandpasezThose slugs are the same Naval Ordnance
ones like I have here. Lynn makes a heavy
jacketed one with nose jacketed, that
might penetrated real good. That 4bore is
real neat gun.Looks to be super strong.
Ken does great work and he puts enough wt in
the gun so it tames recoil.Cases Ken
supplies are turned, and one someone measured
for me showed base as 1.097 in and mouth
measured 1.040 I think. Cases I made from 20mm measure the same, and use same bullets..Ed

I might be able to come up with something like that.

Awesome gun Tom. Very classy, the only thing missing is the hammers!

Seriously, its great to see someone who appreciates (AND hunts with) the classics. Well Done indeed!

SAFARIKIDYes,I would want some Solids with a Very Flat Face, almost like a Wadcutter of 900 grs for the 600 and 2000 for the double.Probably all I really need is the ones for the 600 as the Double is regulated for the Naval Ordance Profiles now and it is shooting under 2" at 50 yds now and cant be easily changed. They wont feed from the Mag,so I could start with one in the tube as Rob does with 2 or 3 Woodleighs backing it....Lookout T-Rex!

RobgunbuilderSAFARIKID- I'm really beginnging to like you!!! Well done. How much IMR7828 did you use? There is a big step up in power once you get past 163 grs! My hat is off to you for firing it without the brake on! I ONLY DID THAT ONCE (never again)! Talk to Fritz454 he might be able to make you some nasty FN bullets for both guns. If not I have access to a Haas CNC lathe now and may begin making some bullets myself. Actually, I spent alot of time on my CZ550 based .600OK and it will feed Fritz's FN bullets. Not great, but reliably. I would not trust it that way for hunting though. You 26lb 4 Bore is 2lbs heavier than my 12GAFH and I have also shot it with 2000gr bullets ( it too has no break and like you pushed me back some). I also have to work on enough upper arm strength to hold it steady, but the power is awesome. Isn't it a trip how these things clobber things? 1 inch steel plate gets punched clear through. Someplace around here I HAVE A 6 INCH thick block of aluminum that I wacked with the 12GaFH with a cast lead bullet. Man what a hole( 4 inches in diameter and 4 inches deep looks like a crater! Yup gotta take it to AFRICA and clobber something big. -Rob

577NitroExpressI still don't think I could fit my pecker in the 4 bore's barrel - the chamber is too small.

Maybe if he sleeved the chamber for you it would provide a tighter fit.

All right that does it Safari, an absolute end the who's got the biggest hammer contest.

Hog KillerSK, I agree with Mac, I would love to see pictures of you shooting the 4bore in full recoil. What a beast. Well done.
If you take that 4 bore on safari, you will need to take 2-3 other people with you just to get enough ammo for the hunt. I am guessing that 15-16 rounds will max out the alloted 11 lbs allowed in your luggage.
