I have read that some have rebuilt mauser model 98 of standard lenght to fit longer cartridges such as 375 H&H, and maybe 458 Lott. Now I wonder what is the best action to build a 458 Lott or a 470 Capstick on.
Sako (magnum lenght)
Mauser 98 (standard lenght)
CZ 602
Winchester model 70 (magnum lenght)

Wich one of those are the strongest?

if you have the 602, or a 550 it's a straight rebarrel

and what i would do.. but would prefer to sell the 602 and buy a box stock 550 in a lott

if it fit me, i would get a ruger in 458 lott

Kalle, They are all strong enough for this conversion, all but the SAKO are well suited for a DGR rifle system. The Sako is a push feed! The model 70 also needs to be one of the pre-64, or the late models that have CRF actions, as well. There was a few years from 1964 to about 1990 that the Mod 70 was PF as well.

I would simply buy a new CZ 550 American chambered for the 458 LOTT from the factory. If you already have a BRNO 602,458 Win Mag, then it will work with a re-chamber,and feed tweek, if it is a 375 H&H a barrel job and tweek will be needed! If however, you want to spend a little more money, and end up with a almost custom rifle, go with the Ruger Express rifle, also factory chambered for the 458 LOTT.

Kalle,

As the guys say, this is a make or buy decision. Generally it is cheaper to buy a finished rifle, but you get more details as you want them by having the rifle built (for a "few dollars more").

I had a .458 Lott built on the Montana Rifleman M99 action because I wanted both right-hand and left-hand actions. It made up into a nice rifle.

The cheapest route is definitely to buy a Chay Zed in .458 Lott. The .470 Capstick is available from the Winchester Custom Shop.

Approximate prices in US$: CZ $750; Ruger $1,500; custom $1,500 and up. Win Custom Shop $3,000 and up.

The Whitworth/Mk X/Charles Daly is awful light for a 458 Lott. It would kick the bejeezus out of you.
The Montanna 1990 is a good choice to build on for a reasonable price and the CZ 550 is a good price for a finished gun, too.

The easiest way is a Ruger #1 but you're back to the bejeezus thing.

My lott is on a cz 550 winnie as lotts won't get to Oz and they where not around when I did my conversion.

I like the cz action for the lott it holds 5 down and one in the chamber uses up all the mag space practically and the extra weight of the cz 550 action is doing no harm with the .458 lott Wink

I love the looks of the M70 but what I have seen o nthe shelf in oz at any rate is not as nicely finished as cz's IMHO also I like the integral base set up of cz rifles as well.

They are also a close mauser copy with a few differences.
