If the top end of your collection had a 300 weatherby Vanguard and them a Win Model 70 in 458 what would you look for in between? The Vanguard has too much personal history to sell. Neither of these current rifles is stainless so I’m a little screwed for wet hunts. A stainless CFR in 338 or 375 comes to mind for me, but what do you think? Is anyone currently making a stainless CFR 375 for less than $1,000? I’m in no hurry, but why is the Ruger M77 338 all weather not the obvious choice? (I know…338’s one forum down ![]()

I really hate to say this but a properly loaded(big, premium bullet)300 WBY is very close to the 338. Go to the 375. Much better ranging capabilities than the 458 and good size bullets for the big stuff. Weatherproof, find the one you like and have it coated.

No doubt about it, a .375H&H. If you only got to have one rifle in this world (Heaven forbid), the .375H&H would be the ticket. Mike

I like the .375 H&H as a great medium bore but I would also look at a .416 Rigby I think it can be that little bit more needed on tough stuff before getting into the.45 caliber and beyond. The Remington M798 is now available in SS and retailes south of $1,000. The .375 caliber is my recommendation.

There is no need to fill that gap. Spend your money on more hunting, not more guns.

While your current battery covers the bases a stainless crf in 338 or 375 will give you a good back up should either of the others let you down. A lot of folks aren't comfortable travelling with just one rifle and neither of the ones you have are a good substitute for the other.
